Hello, it's me, the ukulele teacher here to teach you how to play Pompeii by Bastille.
So grab your uke, make sure it's in [C] tune [Am] [C] and sit back and relax while I teach you how to play
Pompeii by Bastille.
So the great thing about this song is there are just four chords all the way
through C, G, E minor and D.
If you already know those chords, skip ahead now.
[C#] Otherwise, let me
show you them.
The first chord is the chord of C.
To play the chord of C, just put your third finger
on the third fret of the first string and that [C] should sound like this.
To play the chord of G,
put your first finger on the second fret of the third string, your second finger on the second
fret of the first string and your third finger on the third fret of the second string.
The chord of
G should sound like [G] this.
To play [G#m] the chord of E minor, put your first finger on the second fret
of the first string, your second finger on the third fret of the second string and your third
finger on the 4th fret [Em] of the 3rd string and leave the 4th string open.
The chord of E
minor should sound like this.
And to play the chord of D, put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd
fingers on the 2nd fret of the 4th, 3rd and 2nd string.
That should [D] sound like this.
[C] Now
if you want to play along with a band, you're going to want to put a capo on the 2nd fret.
But for simplicity's sake, I'm going to show you this one without a capo.
So you've
got your 4 chords, C, [G] G, [Em]
E minor [D] and D.
[F] And perhaps you can already hear the song starting
to take shape.
Now this song is in 4-4, so there are many strumming patterns that you
can choose from.
But the strumming pattern that I'm going to use is down, down, up,
up, [C] down, up.
[E] Now the great thing is, everything except 2 lines in the song is just C, G, E
minor, D.
So firstly, learn how to play C, G, E minor, D [C] with this strumming pattern.
C,
[G] G, [Em] E minor,
[D] D.
[C] C,
[G] G, [Em] E minor,
[D] D.
[G] Once you've got that down, [C] you've basically got almost
all of the song.
Let me show you how it goes.
[G] [Em]
[D] [C]
[G] [Em]
[D] I [C]
was left [G] to my [Em] own [D] devices.
[C]
Many [G] days fade away [Em] with nothing to [D] show.
[C] And the walls kept
tumbling [G] down in the [Em] city that I [D] love.
[C] Great clouds roll over [G] the hills, bringing darkness
[Em] from above.
[D]
[B] But if you [C] close your eyes, [G] does it almost [Em] feel like nothing [D] changed at all?
And if you [C] close your eyes, does it [G] almost [Em] feel like you've been [D] here before?
[N] And that's basically how to play the entire song.
There's just one bit [C#m] that's ever so slightly
different.
That's the bit that [Am] goes, how am I going to be [G] an optimist [D] without you?
[Am]
How
am I going to [G] be an [D] optimist without you?
[D#] And that's exactly the same as the rest of
the song.
You just [E] miss out the E minor chord.
So it's just [C] C, G, [N] D.
C, G, D.
Because the
chord changes are quite quick, I just play 2 downs on the C and 2 down strokes on the
G.
And then the full [C#] pattern on the D, [C] like this.
C, [G] G, [D] D.
[Am] C, [G] G, [D] D.
[C] How am I going to
[G] be an [D] optimist without you?
[C] How am I going to [G] be an [D] optimist without you?
[C#] But if you
[C] close your eyes, does [G] it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And that's how to play Pompeii by Bastille.
