The first guitar I purchased [F#] was an Ibanez Fender [F] copy.
I couldn't afford a Fender.
[F#] Actually, my dad took me to the guitar shop.
I was nine and it was an Ibanez Telecaster Deluxe walnut colour
with the mother of pearl pickguard and the whole bit.
I thought it was just absolutely gorgeous.
This one we call the [E] Dirty Snake and it's, obviously,
it's based on the [F] original Snakehead that Leo designed in, I think, 48 or [E] 49.
[A]
[E] I've always loved [B] this design, I mean, [Em] because I'm such a Fender junkie
and to know that this is, for all intents [Am] and purposes,
[G] [G] the guitar elements that Leo originally put together
[A] to then start getting [E] everybody's opinion on what should be different.
This is pretty much what it [D] looks like.
[Am] [D]
[G] I just love the simplicity [D] of it and I also love the [B] crude nature.
This stuff is all kind of hand cut and bent up and it's all just bolted on there
and this [B] thing's just cut by hand, stuck on,
and I just love how completely garage the whole thing [F#] looks.
It's got a huge baseball kind of neck, there's [B] no truss rod in it
and [E] it's just, you know, [E] it's the beginning of Fender, that's why I love it [B] so much.
[E]
[B]
[F#] This is a straight up Clapton Strat with the mid [D] boost in it.
[Am] [A]
I really love the La [E] Cabrinitas, I've got a few La [B] Cabrinitas,
and I love the neck on them.
[F#] I got [F#m] Fender to do me a couple of left-handed La [A#] Cabrinita necks
[G#m] because I [F#] like the tension of the [E] strings when they're strung [G#m] this way,
which, you know, in some ways I think is really what they should be
because it's [D] much [E] more the way piano [D] is strung.
So the [F#] tension on this is right and the high E feels [A] right because it's a shorter distance.
As [G#m] weird [E] as it looks, and it's not easy to tune mid-song,
[B] I just like the tension on the strings.
[E] My dad was a drummer [F#] when he was a [A#m] teenager.
[A#] And [G#] then so when I came [E] along, apparently when I was about [D] four,
he bought [E] me this little ukulele and he said I could strum it in time with the [G] radio.
[A#]
[G] So then when I turned six, [F#m] they found out that was a good [B] age to teach,
had me learn chords [F#] and stuff, so we got a teacher.
[E] So I started playing at six, and so it wasn't like there was ever a conscious decision.
I [F#m] started playing, I started singing, [E] and it just felt as natural as [A] breathing or walking.
It was just
[F#] incredibly [B] natural.
[C#] And so I just always did it.
[G#] I don't ever in my life [F#m] remember [B] thinking, I'm going to do this for a [E] living.
It [D] was just that's what I was [E] doing.
I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
