[Dm]
[A] [G] It was 1989, [F#m] I did my first trip to the [Dm] States and I went to [A] Manny's in [D] New York [Dm] and it was
so [A] legendary and I just couldn't wait to go there and I really wanted to find a great [D] telecaster.
The years preceding that I'd gotten way into Ricky Skaggs [G] records and Ray [D] Flack particularly
and Albert Lee and it was that real, just that whole chicken picking thing and they
were all kind of teleguys [C#] and it just, it fit, I just loved that kind of [B] playing [A] and
it fit what I was doing and I walked into [N] Manny's and this guitar, brand new, looking
a little better than [Dm] it does now, was sitting in this glass case, you know, like, [A] 89 was
the 40th anniversary and this guitar had just come out [D] and I remember walking in and just,
it was like, [A] oh, like this holy [G] grail of a guitar for [D] me and so I went in and asked the
guy if I could play the guitar and he's looking at [G] me and he's like, yeah, [A] take your belt
buckle off, take your [G] jacket off and he buttons and [D] everything and he's like, you know, [C] it's
[D] like I was going to get to read the scripture or something and so he pulled it [Em] out and I
played it [Bm] and I played it [A] forever and the guy eventually was like, [D] look, you're going
to buy it or are you just going to keep playing it?
I went away and I talked to some friends of mine and just sort of [Bm] scraped off enough money
somehow by borrowing and I did all kinds of things to scrape up the money to get my [F] first telly.
[Gm]
[G] [B]
[G] I've had this guitar now 21 years and [D] [E] so it's just so incredibly comfortable [A] and familiar
for me [Em] [A] but a few years ago I was in Los Angeles and [Bm] my guitar [G] tech came back from the guitar
center [D] and he said, they've got another [G] 40th anniversary telly just like yours [D] down there
and so he brought it down and this is it, [A] this one is a 188 [D] [G] [D] and this one is 279 of 300.
This ended up being my main guitar for the last several [C] years [G] on the [A] tour and Clarence
became [Bm] a backup.
Funny, I called it Clarence after the angel in It's a [G] Wonderful Life [A] because I remember
that scene where [E] Clarence sort of like, [Bm] he shows Jimmy Stewart what life would have [E] been
had he not have been there and [A] I wonder what life would have been like [D] if I hadn't had
this guitar because it's been with me through so many [G]
insane [D]
struggles and challenges and
times of being lost and it's just, it's been there [Bm] through all of them [D] and I've written
like I say so many songs on this guitar that have also helped me move up into the light
so it's just beautiful you know for so many reasons but what I really loved finding out
was [Em] evidently [G] Leo Fender's real name is [F#m] Clarence so [D] I loved finding that out because there
you [G] go, Lord Wilson Stewart.
