[C] Hey guitar friends, I hope you're all doing great.
Thanks [N] so much for joining me and learning another one today.
I appreciate you being here.
I got a few requests to do the song called Paint Me a Birmingham by Tracy Lawrence, so
that's what [G#] we're going to be working on.
Cool song, got a little bit of picking in [F#] here and some strumming.
[N] So grab your guitars, stick around and let's get this one learned.
Okay, for this song we're going to be playing it with the capo on the fourth fret.
The chords we [F#] need are D, [D#m] B minor, [B] G, [G#m] A.
[C#] [F#] We're also going to be adding the third fret here
on the A, [C#] on the second string.
And we'll [G#m] need the E minor.
There's also a key change in here, and so I'll show [G#] you those chords for that key change
here in a little bit.
But [G#m] let's start out on the intro.
Here's what the [C#] intro sounds like.
[F#]
[C#] [D#m] [C#] [B]
[F#] [F#] So I'm just playing D, [D#m] B minor, [B] and [Fm] G.
[C#] But what I'm doing, I'm starting out with a slide up.
You can either [G#] slide up or [A#] hammer on [F#] and pull off, but I'm [G#] going on the fourth string.
[F#] [G#] So [G#] second, fourth, [F#] second, open.
[A#] [F#] Then I'm playing the D chord.
And we're [G#] doing that same thing.
[F#] [B] And then we're going to hammer on the fifth [D#] string into the [D#m] B minor.
[C#] [F#] Then we're going to do the same thing [B] and play the G chord.
[F#] [G#] So here that is a little bit [A#] slower.
[F#]
[C#] [F#] [D#] [D#m] [C#] [B]
[F#] [D] And if you don't want to do that picking or you're not at [F#] that level yet, you can just strum that.
And what we're doing here is down, down, up, down, down, [G#] up for the strumming pattern.
So here's what that intro would sound like [F#] just strumming.
[D#m]
[B] [F#]
Okay, [G#] and then we go into our first verse.
Let's run through that.
Starting on the D chord.
[F#] [G#m]
[C#] [F#]
[C#] [B] [F#] [G#m]
[F#m] [C#] [F#]
[G#m] [D#]
[C#] [G#m] [F#]
[C#] [G#] [F#] So same strumming pattern there.
Down, down, up, down, down, up.
You can also replace your first down for just the bass note.
[G#m]
[C#] [F#m] [C#] And for the A, when we're coming to the A [F#] on the verse, we're going to be playing it
with the, [G] on the third fret first for the second [C#] string.
[F#] [C#] And then back to the A major.
So [G#] that's our verse.
Then we'll go into the chorus.
Here's the chorus for you.
[F#]
[D#m] [B]
[F#] [C#] [F#]
[D#m] [B]
[F#] [C#] [F#]
[D#m] [C#] [B]
[F#] And [G] then we go into our second verse and [G#] chorus there.
And then the key changes.
So let's go ahead and just start on the intro.
Go ahead and play along with me here through the intro, verse, and chorus.
And then we'll [F#m] do the key change right after that.
So here [G#] we go, guys.
[C#] He [F#] [D#m]
[G#] [B] [F#]
was sitting there, [G#] his [G#m] brushing hand, [F#] [C#] painting waves as they danced [F#] upon the sand.
[C#] [B] [F#] Every stroke [G#m] brought to life.
[C#] The deep blue of the ocean is [F#] the morning sky.
[G#m] I asked him if he only painted [C#] ocean scenes.
[G#] He said, [G#m] for $20, [F#] I'll paint [C#] you anything.
Could [F#] you paint me a Birmingham?
Make it look just [D#m] the way I planned.
[B] Little house on the edge of town.
[C#] Porch glowing all the way around.
Put [F#] her there on the front yard swing.
Cotton [D#m] dress, make it early spring.
For [B] a while, she'll be mine again.
[C#]
Paint me a [F#] Birmingham.
[G#] Paint me a Birmingham.
Make it [Fm] look just the way I planned.
Little [C#] house on the edge of town.
Porch [D#] glowing all the way around.
Put her [G#] there on the front yard swing.
Cotton dress, [Fm] make it early spring.
For a while, [C#] she'll be mine again.
[D#] You could paint me [G#] a Birmingham.
[E] So there for that key change, we're just [G#] doing E, [Fm] C sharp minor, [C#] A, [D#] and B.
[G#]
[G#] [B] [F#]
[G#]
Key:
F#
C#
G#
B
D#m
