[N] [C] [B] Hey y'all, it's Jonathan Harris.
[G#] I just want to show you how to play the song Country Boy Can't [F#] Survive [G#] by Hank Jr.
I'll [A] start off by showing you the first part.
[C] [F#] [D] This song is [E] [G] tuned in a drop D tuning.
So the first thing you're going to [D] do [E] is [A] take your E note here.
[E] [D] You're going to take that E note and you're going to drop it down.
And the way you can do that is you take your third string, your D string,
and sort of [G] go back and forth between the two until you can get your top E string to move down to a higher D.
[D]
Okay, now we're in the right tuning for the song.
[B] The song [G] starts off in a [D] D chord.
And by the way, this particular D chord, [G] you can use all the strings.
You don't have to [D] just use the five strings you usually play.
You can use the whole string.
It starts off like that.
Then it's going to go to A minor [C] [G] chord.
[G#] Then it's going to be in D form.
[D] What that means is, as you get formation here, move it down three.
And then [Dm] you get D, [D]
[C] A minor [Dm] 7, F.
[D]
[C]
[Dm] [D]
Alright, that's the first part of the song.
Start strumming.
And then it goes into a little riff here.
It goes like that.
So, [F#] we [D] end the chords on a D chord like this.
So this is what [G] you're going to be going into the riff [D] on.
You're going to take [G] your second finger and go [F] on [Gm] the third fret [F#m] of [G] your [F] D string.
[G] Then go to the second fret, which [F] is this one.
[E] [F] [E]
Like [A] that.
[C] And then go through and open [C#] the D string.
[Dm]
Just like that.
You're going to do the same [Dm] exact thing to the next string, [Am] [G#]
the A string.
[A]
[Am] And then the [C] third fret to the fourth [D] fret of your D string, [G] which is now actually a drop D.
[C] [F] [F#] Like [F#m] that.
[F] Hammer on.
[F#] And [D] then play it open.
[F] [D]
So the [Dm] whole thing goes
[D]
So, if I want to do it [Dm] fast, I [D] go
I'll do [Dm] it a little slower.
[D]
And then play that D chord again.
So the whole thing, the whole intro starts out, sounds like
[C] [Dm] [D]
[Dm] this.
[D] [A] Then when you get into the song, between [G] lines, there's another riff [F#m] [C#m] he [A] plays.
I'll just give [G] you an example and start playing the song.
[D] [C] [G] [D]
What he does there in [G#] between is he sort of [D] plays a little [C] riff.
It's the third fret to the [G] fifth fret on your A string.
I use my first and third [D] finger.
I'll do a hammer on.
[Am] So, third, fifth, and then open.
[D] [A] And then I take my first [B] finger from the [F#m] third fret of my A string, which is now tuned to a drop [F] D.
Right there.
And I bend [D] it.
Slower.
And if you've got one true stick guitar, knowing [Am] just those chords [G#] and those riffs, you can get through the whole song.
[A] It [D] sounds pretty good.
[C]
[Dm] [D] Preacher Man says [C] it's the end of time
[G] The Mississippi River, she's [C] going dry
[D] The interest is up and the [C] stock market's down
[G] You're gonna get shot if you [F#m] go downtown
[D]
[C] [D] I'll be back in the woods
