[N] Hello, [A#] it's me, the ukulele teacher, [D#] here to teach you how to [F#] play one of your most requested songs [F] in recent weeks, [G] Mad World.
So without [F] further [Fm] ado, grab your uke,
[C] make sure it's in tune, [Am] [C] and sit [Fm] back and relax while I teach you how to [A] play Mad World.
[E] Before we start,
I'm going to tell you this is an easy way to play the [Cm] song.
There are much harder [G#] ways to play it,
but this is a straightforward way, and you'll be able to play it by the end of this video.
You'll need just four chords.
A minor,
[Am] [C] C,
[G]
G,
[D] and D.
[F] Now A minor, [C#m] you just have one finger [D] on the second fret of the [B] fourth string, like [Am] this.
C, [E] you just put your ring finger on [A] the third fret of the first string, [C] like this, and it's easy to move between [Am] the two.
[C] G is the hardest [D] chord in the song, and it's not even [A] that difficult to be honest with you.
You put your [Cm] first finger on the second fret of the [F] third string, your second finger on the [C] second fret of the first
string, and your [D] third finger on the [A] third fret of the [G] second string.
And then the [Am] fourth and final chord in the song is [Bm] the chord of D [F#] major.
For that chord,
you just take [C#] your first three fingers and put them on the second fret of the bottom three [D] strings, like this.
Now you've [A] got your four chords.
A minor,
[C] C,
[G] G, and [D] D.
[C#] You can already hear the song is starting to take shape.
What [A] I suggest you do is a very simple finger picking pattern.
[Bm] That is very easy [C#] to do, but sounds quite impressive.
[E] I'm going to play it first, and I'm going to [G#] teach you my [Am] secret.
[C] [G]
[D] [Am]
[C] [G]
[D] Now that sounds quite [F#] impressive, but you will be able to play it with a [D] bit [E] of practice.
Before [F] I teach you this pattern,
you must make sure you've got [A#] all four chords down until you can move between them without thinking about it.
Now I'm going to teach you the secrets [Cm] of the right [D#] hand.
Now to make this easy for me [D] to teach you,
I'm going to call [C] my thumb my thumb, [B] and my next three fingers fingers one, [C] two, and three.
To play this pattern, [C#] keep your thumb continually on the [Gm] fourth string, [C] and
your fingers one, two, and three on [G] strings three, two, and one, like this.
[Am] [F#m] Now I'm going to call out the finger that you need [F#] to play.
To start with, just play three, two, [C] one, three, [A#] two, one,
three, [Am] two, like this.
[A#] [F#] And play it again [Am] and again.
[F] Now let's play [D] it with the [C] chord of C.
Three, two, one, three, two, one, [Am] three, two, three, [G#] two, [C] one, three, two, one, three, [D] two.
Now it does [F#] take a bit of [D#] practice if you're not [C] used to using your right hand like this,
but [A] it's very, very easy, and you'll soon get the hang [C#] of it.
But how do we make it sound [C] even more impressive?
Very, very simple.
Every [A] time you play three, [F#]
also [C] play the thumb as well.
Practice that pattern with [A] all four chords.
A minor,
[Am] [C] C,
[G] G,
[D]
D,
[Am] A minor,
[C] [G] G,
[D] D.
[F#m]
And that's how [G#m] to play the entire [A] verse of Mad World.
Of course, if you're finding it too [D#] difficult to do the finger picking,
you can [B] always just strum.
One easy pattern that you can use, that I use for lots and lots of things, is [A#] down, down, up,
up, down, up.
And you can just play it very, very slowly [Am] like this.
[G]
[D] [Am]
[G] [D]
Now I'm going to teach you how to play the chorus.
[A] You only need two chords, the A minor chord [F#] and the D major chord.
[D]
Now, if you're doing the finger picking, you [Em] can carry on with the finger picking.
It's [A#] just A minor and D, and repeat that six times [Am] like this.
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] Or, if you're strumming, you can carry [G#] on strumming the same pattern [Am] like this.
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
[D] So now you've [A] got the [G#] verse and the chorus.
You've got [B] the entire song, [A] Mad World.
[F] I've been the Ukulele Teacher.
I'll [D#] be back again soon with another video [E] for you.
In the meantime, if you've got any thoughts, ideas or suggestions for [F#] future videos,
please leave [D#] them in the comments below.
I [F#] read them all and I appreciate [D] every one of them.
Until then,
I love you all and I
