How To Play Jackson Browne Too Many Angels Introduction chords
Start Jamming...
Let's take a moment to talk about tuning before we get into playing too many angels.
If you watch Jackson Brown playing this song live, or several versions on YouTube, he's
playing either in the key of E minor or [E] E-flat minor, depending on [F] whether he's tuned his
guitar down by one half-step, which he likes to do these days.
But he doesn't use a capo [D] on any of those [F] videos.
That tells us that because of the tuning of [D] this song, he is playing in standard tuning
except that [Db] the D [E] string, the fourth string [Eb] of his guitar, is tuned up to E.
If you want to do it exactly like Jackson Brown, try that.
But I'm going to give you a word of [Db] warning.
I haven't done that, [F] and the reason is that an acoustic guitar fourth [E] string stands some
chance of breaking if you try and tune it up from [F] D to E.
So although that's definitely what Jackson Brown is doing, [Gb] we can get the same result
by tuning our whole guitar down [F] and then capoing back up again to bring us back into the key
of, as I'm going to play it here, E-flat minor.
Capoing at the first fret.
If that didn't make any sense to you, don't worry about it.
Let's go through string by string what the tuning is for this song.
I'll take the capo off here for a moment.
We have this tuning.
Your first string, you tune down [D] to D.
[B] Second string, tune down to A.
[A]
[F] Third string, tune
down to F.
[N] Fourth string, keep it as [D] D.
[Cm] Fifth string, tune [G] it down to G.
And sixth string,
[Dm] tune down to D.
[F] And then capo your guitar either at the first fret if you want to play along with the live
acoustic version, or the second fret if you want to play along with the original album
version, or if you're just playing by yourself, any fret you like that suits your voice.
Alright, and don't forget, there is an [E] easier tuning option where [F] you don't retune any of
the strings except for the fourth string, which you would tune up to the note E.
If you want to take a risk, if you think your guitar will take it and not break the string,
then you can do that, and that's what Jackson Brown [N] is doing.
That's simpler.
Anyway, I've down-tuned and I'm capoing at the first fret.
Okay, now what that gives [B] us is our Travis [Eb] picking bass with two, let's call them Es,
it's actually an Eb of course where we are at the moment, but we rock between the sixth
and fourth string and get that regular alternating bass.
And [F] for most of the song, that's where we're going to [Eb] be, rocking between the sixth and
the fourth string.
[F] Let's get into the introduction.
We'll take this song section by section.
I suggest that you have your tab in front of you to look at the specifics of what we're
playing [B] and somewhere have your song sheet around because that's going to [F] help us with
the structure of the song.
Here's that intro.
[Eb]
So, we know [F] about Travis picking, the bass is going to rock relentlessly, six, four,
[Eb] six, four, six, four, six, four, six, four.
[Bb]
And the [Eb] first two bars of your tab are that first riff.
We start [F] by pinching sixth and three with the third [Db] string fretted at the second fret
[Eb] and we're going to slide the third string to the fourth fret.
In the rhythm, one hand, then the thumb plays the fourth string, middle finger plays the
second string, thumb plays the sixth string,
[F] index finger plays the third string still
fretted at the fourth [Ebm] fret, [F] and as soon as we've played it, we bring it back down to
the second fret, pinch the fourth and third [Eb] strings and pull off the third string from
second fret to open.
[Ebm]
[Eb] That's the first bar, but we need to put the middle finger [F] back on the second fret of the
third string, pinch it with the sixth string and slide it back to the fourth fret to get
the whole sense [Eb] of the riff.
That second bar will finish four, six, four.
Let's do that with the rhythm.
One and two and three [Ab] and four and one [Eb]
and two, three, four.
Alright?
[D] Now bars three and four of your tab are exactly
