Hi guys, Terry Dean from Acoustic Coffee Covers coming to you today from the Bluebird, no,
from my home studio.
My wife got me this hat when she went to Nashville, I kind of like it.
Anyways, we're going to look at Open G Tuning today.
Great little open kind of a sound,
a lot of guys use it.
The song we're going to look at today is Jackson Browne, Running On Empty.
Hope you like it.
Alright, let's tune up the guitar first here, let's blow up.
First note you're going to want on your guitar is [D] take your standard tuning from an E
and bring it down to a D.
So match that up, you're going to [C#] bring that [D] E string,
go down a little bit lower if you need B there to bring it back up, it's always easier.
Then take the A string, fifth [G] string, match that up with the G,
then take your high E, [D]
[Bm]
[G]
if you muffle your thumb right over the low E string,
you get that full G chord.
If you play all of them, you get a G and it's still [D] okay,
it's just a G with a D in the root [G] bass there.
Alright, let's look at the chord positions,
what we're going to need here today, we're going to need an A [C] minor seventh position,
that's called a G over [G] C when you're in G tuning,
[C] [G] right there.
Next chord is an E minor,
we're going to bar [E] three, [A] six, five, [E] four on the [B] second, add the pinky or the third [Em] on the fourth,
okay, like that or like that.
I like the pinky, a little easier to get this first finger kind of
bent up there, so a little bit more intermediate, you can do it.
Let's [C] look at the C chord right
there or a full bar chord which is on the fifth fret, five, four, three, two, one strings all
the way down, don't necessarily need to play the, you can muffle that open low D there,
so that's [B] a C.
A B minor is kind of like an E [N] minor position but with the top finger of like
an A minor or your second finger on this case it would be the second string third [G] fret and then
it would be when you slide it down that's B [C] minor, here's your A minor, you're just sliding it down
to E minor position with the B on [G#] the, not the B but the second finger on the first fret, [G] so it's
[Am] G, A [G] minor, B minor, [C] [D] C, D, you see that and [E] an E minor, [Em]
get it out there, you got to kind of bend
it and twist your hand underneath there a little bit and those are all the chords here, so let's
look at it here, I'll just do a verse and a chorus, run you through, there's a little [G] lick at the
beginning too when you go in [C] the open, [G]
[C] [G]
slow, [A] [B] second, slide [D] up to the fourth, open, [B] [A] four, two, [G]
open,
[C] [G]
[C] [G]
[C] [G]
[Em]
[G] [D] C, [G]
B minor, [D] D,
[G] [C] looking at the [G] road rushing on the moon wheels, [C] [G]
here we go, [C] looking back [G] the years gone by [C] like so many
summer [G]
fails, [C] 65 [G] I was 17 [C] and running up on [G] a wall, [C] I don't know [G] where I'm running now, I'm [D] just running along,
now into the chorus, [G] running on, running on empty, running [C] on, running [G]
back, [C] running [G] in the sun, but I'm running [Em] behind,
that's pretty much the whole song, then it does a little like the intro again in between the [C] chorus,
[G]
[C] [G]
[C] [G]
[Em]
[G] [C] [G]
[C]
[G] [C]
[G] [C]
[G] [Em]
[G] [D]
[C] [Bm] [Am] [G]
there's a little outro [D] at the end there too, he's just walking down the [G] chords,
I hope you enjoyed it, a little Jackson Browne open G tuning, Terry Dean [B] from Acoustic
