Chords for Ry Cooder Style Groove in Open G Tuning

In this free video, I'm going to talk to you about kind of a Rye Cooter slide guitar style
in Open G tuning.
And this is kind of a lick I just kind of created that's sort of in the style of Rye
Cooter using Open G tuning slide.
So what I'm doing is a groove here.
We got this going.
_ _ So I'm just playing that with my fingers, my thumb and my first two finger here.
We got the G string, _ which was the A string if you're in standard tuning.
G string and then the two middle strings, the D and the G string as our main groove.
_ _ _ _ And then I'm just doing this hammer on on the open string [B] of the D [D] string.
[F] _ _ Open [G] G string _ and then third fret of [Bb] the G string.
[G] Open [F] third fret of the D string _ [G] and then [F] hitting the [G] finally the open G string.
So you have this slowly and _ _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] you can kind of bend that third fret on the G string just
slightly to make it sound a little bit more, give it a little bit more [G] style. _ _
_ Slowly _ _ _ _ [D] _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ hit it twice after that. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Now we're going to hit the bottom fifth string, excuse me, fifth fret on the high E [Bb] string,
which is the [G] G note, the key we're in, the higher octave. _
_ _ _ _ So _ _
[Dm] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
I'm hitting the G, two G's at once, the bass and then the high G _ _ _ _ on the, _ this is now
a D string, the high D string and then pulling off third fret of the [Dm] high D string [G] _ _ _
_ to the
open string, third fret. _ _ _
_ _ Then I'm sliding backwards to the first fret of the [C] B string, _ _ [Bb] _ [G] _ sliding into the third fret
of the G [A] string and pulling off.
[G] _ _ _ Slowly, the complete lick. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [G] _
_ _ So _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ when you hit that high G string, you got to hit it right after you do those two _ rhythm licks.
You have this, _ _ [Dm] _ [Gm] _ [G] _ _ _
_ [D] you're hitting it three times actually and then [G] you're going immediately.
That's if you miss that, you're going to miss the groove. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ That's the trick to getting that down.
Now one more time, extremely slow. _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [G] _ _
_ So that's the groove that you want to accomplish here and it just takes time of playing it
slowly and getting that groove down.
You can also tap your foot, which [C] helps out a lot to keep the beat.
One, two, three, four, [G] one, two, three, four.
_ _ [Gm] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
So he does that kind of groove a lot and then he'll just improvise through there, through
the open strings and whatnot.
Then you got licks [D] on the twelfth [G] fret you could do.
[Gm] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ That's kind of the style he does a lot and it's kind of a, maybe a New Orleans style blues.
You could change the beat up. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ He'll often use those type of New Orleans grooves, but we just want to focus on the
main groove, getting that and then you can start adding other stuff later.
So the main groove once again is _ slowly and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ you just want to take that slowly and then
every day just practice it and kind of get it up to more speed.
If you can't play it the fast style, it sounds cool playing it slow and eventually just building
it up to speed and you'll have it down.
