How To Play Jim Croce Lover's Cross (intro only) chords
Start Jamming...
Let's take a look at my favourite Jim Croce song, Love is Cross.
[N] We're in the key of C, and what we're going to need to learn here is the introduction,
which is different [B] from anything else that appears in the song.
[Eb] Then we have the verse, and a [D] bridge, and then the outro, which is almost the same as the introduction.
So let's take those, each section at a time, starting with the introduction, which sounds like [C] this.
It's the first four bars of your tab.
[F] [E] [A]
[Am] [G]
[D] Despite being in the key [Eb] of C, we're going to start with an F chord.
He played it as a full bar, and I'm doing the same thing.
Your other options are, of course, the F chord this way, with the thumb hooked over on the 6th string 1st fret.
Or, if you can't do either of those, play it as an F chord like this,
[Bb] but then your bass note that would be the [F] 6th string has to be the 4th string.
Alright, we're going to play a pitch, we're going to pitch [F] 6 and 1,
and then come up the chord, 3rd string, 2nd string, 1st string.
[Eb] Then we're going to go to an E7 chord.
Make an E chord, and then you have a couple of picks before you need the little finger [G] on the 2nd string 3rd fret.
We're [E] going to pinch 6 and 1, and then play 3, 2, 3.
[Ab] [Eb] Like almost the whole song, this counts [F] 1 and 2 [E] and 3 and 4 and.
[Eb] Now we go to an A minor chord, and we're going to come up the chord [A] 5, 4.
I [Ebm] do both of those with my [A] thumb.
5, 4, 3, 2.
And then he [Eb] just hooks the thumb over on the 6th string 2nd fret, but [Ab] doesn't change this chord shape.
He pinches 6 and 2 and [B] hammers to the [Bb] 3rd fret on the 2nd string.
[Gb] And [D] 3, [Am] 2 back at the 1st fret, [Cm] and the open 3rd string [G] because he's moving to the next chord shape, which will be a G.
[Cm]
If that hammer isn't working for you, just play it as a pinch [Ebm] of 6 and 2.
[Gb]
[G] [Ebm]
The rhythm of that one is slightly [Eb] different.
For the only time, no, not the only time, almost the only time in the song,
[A] 1 and 2 [A] and [D] 3 and [G] 4 and.
The hammer on is double speed.
[Eb] To a G, and we want to play [G] 6 and 2, 3, 2 at the 3rd fret, 3.
Now F [Eb] major 7 is our F chord without this lying down finger.
This finger lifts up to open the 1st string.
And then we'll need, if we want to play it like Jim Croce, to hook the thumb over on the 6th string 1st fret.
Again, if you can't do that, use the [F] 4th string as [B] your bass.
It's 6 and 2, [F] 3, [Am] 1, 3.
[Eb] I'll do this for the last time with the count, and then we'll forget the count until we get to the only bar where it's going to be different.
Like [F] all the others, almost all the others, [G] 1 and 2 [F] and 3 [Am] and 4 and.
Now [Eb] to G with the 6th string 3rd fret and 2nd string 3rd fret, [G] 6 and 2, 3, 1, which will be [Em] open, 3.
[G]
And [D] leaving the little finger where it is, put the finger on the 1st string [Db] 1st fret for a G7 chord, [G] 6 and 1, 2, 3, 4.
[D] That's the [Cm] intro.
Here it is again slowly.
[F] [E]
[A] [D]
[G] [F] [Am]
[G]
