[G]
[A] If I could make a wish I [Db] think I'd
When I was young, my [D] barber, he was a flamenco [Dm] player.
And I was, what, [E] eight, nine years old?
And he always said to me, let me teach you how to play a little guitar.
And I'd say, no.
I love Buddy Holly.
I love Johnny Cash.
I love Roy Orbison, Elvis, the Evelies.
Teach me three chords.
So he taught me A, D, and E.
[Ab] And with those three chords, I learned all these pop songs,
and I've gone around the world with three chords.
[Bb] I could make a wish [A] I think [D] I'd pass.
[Eb] Can't think of [Ebm] anything [Bb] I need.
The original song was written [G] because this [F] girl that I met in Los [F] Angeles, I haven't
seen her since [D] the 70s, so I have no idea if she's still around.
[G] But she was so [Eb] kind.
I didn't have a place to stay, [Gm] and she offered me her place.
[A] And she said, and if you drive me [D] to work, you can have my Carmen gear, convertible [Ebm] Carmen
gear, during [Bb] the day, and then you pick me up.
I thought, wow, Southern California, convertible Carmen gear, a place to stay.
This is wonderful, you know?
There's [Ebm] nothing left to be [Bb] desired.
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
About a week later, [Eb] she said to me, well, are you going to drive me to work?
And I go, no, I'm not going to go today.
You take the [Bb] car.
I'm going to stay here.
I think I feel I'm going to write a song.
Sometimes all I need is [F] the air that I breathe and [Bb] to love you.
All I need [G] is the air that I breathe, yes, to [Bb] love you.
All I need is [F] the air that I breathe.
[Fm]
[Eb] [Bb]
[F] [E] So sleep, silent [Gm] angel, go [A] to sleep.
And she cried and I cried, and I didn't know the song [Fm] was going to be a big hit or [Gb] anything.
I just thought it was a great [G] song to put on my first album, the Never Rains album.
A few years later, Phil Eberle [A] did it.
He did an album of 10 [Db] songs.
Nine were his and one was mine.
And he sent the Hollies the whole album [D] and said, I know you love the Eberle [Gm] brothers
and [Bm] maybe you want to do one of these songs.
[Gb] And the Hollies chose [C] the one he didn't write.
Sometimes all I need is [G] the air that I breathe.
[F] [C]
[G]
[C] But I'm a [G] creep, I'm a [B]
loser.
[C]
I don't [Cm] belong, [C] it's okay [G] for me.
[B] And it was the publisher, he heard them on a [C] radio show in England saying,
you know, this song was inspired by the air that I breathe.
We just, you know, we took the [Cm] chords and we took the melody [Eb] and we just said,
[G] gosh, you know, this part with this part that we wrote sounds so good, you know.
[B]
[C] And suddenly I was sent a piece of paper to sign, you know, and I looked at it
and [Cm] it said you have a third of the song and I go, [C] what?
But I'm [G] a creep, I'm [B] a loser.
I felt very uncomfortable, you know, but there was nothing I could do.
It was a legal thing, [C] you know, I mean, they actually admitted to, you know,
so I said, okay, so now whenever they use creep for a movie or [D] for a game
or for whatever [G] it is, they write to me and they say, would you give permission?
And I always say, yeah, [B] sure.
All these lawsuits [Gb] and all these things, I think it's silly, you know, I really do.
It [C] shouldn't be about money and it shouldn't be about egos,
[G] it should be about [Cm] love and wonderful things.
That's what I feel.
[A] All I feel is the [E] air that I breathe [A] just to love you.
