[F#] Hi everyone, this is Rick at Tasty Guitar.
Well, if there was ever any doubt about the roots of soul and R&B music,
one just needs to look to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in [F] Memphis, Tennessee
and see the real turn-of-the-century Mississippi Delta Church reassembled inside the building.
It's quite a sight.
Today I'm going to show you three fairly simple gospel -inspired chordal licks.
Now, these will sound great over really common chord progressions
and will take your rhythm playing to a new level of soulfulness.
So let's jump right in.
[Gm] [G]
[D] [Gm] [G]
[Gm] [G]
[Gm]
[G] [D] Okay, now this first lick works really great in replacing just a regular [F#] kind of dominant chord groove.
Like say if you were just grooving on a 7 chord
[G] or a 9 chord or something like that.
This would work really well replacing that
or also to be a second part if somebody else is playing [A#] that kind of groove
and you want to do something different.
[F#m] Now, this is basically starting on kind of a G minor shape up here.
[Gm] I'm sliding into this [F#m] [Gm] and I'm giving it a little bit of a vibrato.
This is to kind of emulate the sound of a vibrato on an organ kind of.
Just give it a little shake.
[Am]
I'm then going to grab these notes right down here, barring my first finger.
[Gm]
[Am] Back [Gm] here.
[G]
Ending on just that G [D]
triad right there.
[Gm]
[Am] [G] [F#m] [Gm]
[G] [D]
[Gm] [Am] [G]
Okay, now [A] here that is [G] again in time.
We are starting on [D] the and of 3.
[G] 1, [D] 2, 3.
[G] [D]
[Gm] [D]
[Gm]
[G]
[A]
[Bm] [F#m] [A]
[F#m] [A]
[Em] [F#m] [A]
[F#m] [B]
This next lick is also based off of just a dominant [A] chord here.
This time we're playing over A7.
[Em] And we're starting on this [G] A9 shape right [A] down [Em] here.
We got [D#] the 9, the [E] B note, the 5 and the flat [Em] 7.
[A] We're going to hit that really short [Em] and cut it off.
We're starting on the 2nd beat.
1.
We're then going to go up to this A6 shape here.
Hitting [C#]
the 3rd, the 6th, the F sharp note and the root.
[F#m] [D] We're going to hit that and cut it off really quickly also.
So far what we [Em] have is this.
1, [F#m] 2, 3.
[G] [Em]
[F#m] We're then going to go up to this [G] G shape.
Slide into that.
[F#m] [G]
[Em] 1.
[F#m] And
[G] then we just go back where we [F#m] started.
[Em] Reverse.
[F#m] [Em]
We're cutting these notes off.
[F#m]
[Em] [F#m]
[Em] [A]
Okay, so [D#] here it is again in time.
[A] Remember we're [E] starting the lick on the 2nd beat.
[Am] [G]
1.
[F#m] [A]
[Bm] 1.
[F#] [Em] [A]
1.
[F#m] [Em] [A] [G]
1.
[Em] 1.
[A]
[Bm]
[A]
[Bm] [A] [G#]
[A]
[Bm] [A] [E]
[A]
[Bm]
[A] [E]
[A] [D]
This last lick works really well [Em] over a 2-5 progression.
I played it [Bm] in the key of A, so I did it over a B minor.
[E] To an E dominant [A] chord.
To [F#] the 1, the A there.
[G] Okay, I'm [E] starting on this [G] B minor [A#m] shape.
[Bm] Up here at the 10th fret.
And I'm going to hit it really short and cut it off.
I'm going to [A] go to this A shape.
[Bm]
[Bm] The B minor, top of the B minor chord right there.
So this first part is actually a triplet. 1.
[A] [Bm] [F] I'm going to continue on down to hit that top of an A chord right there.
[Bm] [A] [A]
Okay, I'm going to then slide back to this A [C#] shape up here at the 9th [A] fret.
[Bm]
[A] [Bm] [A] [G#] [A]
And then [Bm] end at the 7th fret there, but then we're doing the change.
So that's actually the top half of an E9 chord.
What we have is this.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [Bm] [A] Now you can also put a couple different types of endings on this.
Instead of [Bm] sliding up to that A chord at the end.
We can do [D#] this little chromatic move here.
[Bm]
[A]
[Bm] That's a nice sound.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [Bm]
[F#] [A]
[Bm] So all those different endings are in the tab as well.
Okay, so here's that one in [E] time again.
I'll [F#] also do it [A] with those alternative endings.
[Bm] [A]
[G#]
[Bm]
[E] [A]
[Bm]
[A]
[Bm] [E]

[D#] [A]
