There's nobody else like Willie.
He is a complete package.
He is just one of a kind.
You know, Willie just moves in his own time and his own space.
Willie [G]
is completely authentic.
I mean, he is the way he is all the time.
Willie is just Willie.
He's not trying to be anybody else.
There's nobody like him.
And there's very few people you can say, there's nobody like him.
If you want to know what the definition of real country music is,
look no further than Willie Nelson.
I've been listening to Willie since I was a little girl.
My grandpa had all the records.
If there were going to be a soundtrack to [C] our childhood,
I know there would be a whole lot of Willie Nelson on [D] that soundtrack.
I think I was introduced to Willie when I was maybe in my mom's stomach.
Well, who could ever not be [G] aware of Willie Nelson?
First, I became aware of Willie when we both came to Nashville.
Before he had a beard, before his hair was long.
[D]
I knew Willie when he was clean shaven and his hair was short.
And he was dorky.
Willie is like a lullaby you [G] heard in childhood.
I don't remember becoming aware of him.
He and my dad were friends.
And he's a connection to my [G] history and my family.
It's really powerful.
My friendship with Willie started when myself and the Hot Band
were [Gm] asked to open for him.
So [G] I got to see Willie every night.
I started sitting in with him.
[D] It really was like a family.
I [Gm] got to open up for him in 2002, [G] right before my first record came out.
It was on the fourth night.
They asked if I wanted to come sing with him.
And I said, yeah, but I haven't met him yet.
And they said, oh, it's fine.
He'll introduce you.
And you just walk on out.
So I met him on stage.
I've never sung with anyone that I'd never met before.
[D] That was a first.
And [G] even though the last 10 years I've gotten to do a lot of cool things,
gotten awards and sold a lot of records, and that's all really great.
But it's still probably the coolest thing I've ever gotten to do.
[D] I could hold out my arms and say I love you this much.
[A] They came to me to do a duet with Willie.
They told me [D] what he was doing for his 80th birthday,
that he was going to do an album called To All the Girls.
And so I jumped at the chance because I love Willie.
If you want to do a [G] duet, I've got a song.
And Willie [D] loved it.
From here [F#] to the moon [G] and back,
[A] who else in this world will love you [D] like that?
It was a song I wrote about my husband.
And it was just a true love song, just a sweet song.
[G]
[D] We come from that world where we sing [A] with our family.
That's where we learn to sing, is sitting around with our parents
and grandparents and family members.
And that's what the [G] song is about.
There are moments [A] when I felt a little emotional singing the song.
And I guess that that's how it's supposed to feel.
[D]
[G]
[Bm] Willie has a [D] very distinct voice.
He has a wise voice.
You can tell that there's [A] wisdom in what he says and what he sings.
[D] And he really believes it.
I have never [G] in my life [D] heard anybody phrase and sing like Willie.
In fact, it's when you try to sing with him that you really realize how [G] different it is.
I don't think that anybody can really [D] describe Willie's vocal phrasing,
except to say that it's completely unique to Willie.
In a lot of ways, he's more like a jazz musician than a country musician
in the [A] way he changes things around every time [D] he sings a song.
I think every singer listens to him and [G] goes,
[D] how does he do that?
Emmylou said that to sing with Willie is [A] like fly fishing.
[D] You never knew which beat he was going to land on.
It's always seemed to work, you know, almost like magic, Willie magic.
Never's just the echo of forever.
[A] I didn't think to ask him, but I wondered if he particularly chose the Christopherson track,
[B] Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends, because Chris is like a brother to me.
And [C#m] the Highwaymen [E] connection, [D] and that's like extended [C#m] family.
I was honored [Em] to do it.
[A] Wow, I got to do this with Willie [C] Nelson.
[F] Dry little island.
[C] You know, Bruce Springsteen's album, Tom Jode, that particular song, Dry Lightning,
I asked Buddy if I could throw a song into the mix that Willie might like.
I think there's [D] a certain [G] male soul poetry [C] going on in [G] those lyrics.
I was actually with him, we were in the studio together.
Willie [F] picked a key, I guess, and we just went out and did it pretty much live.
[C] Willie changed it up a bit.
He Willie'd up the melody a little bit.
[G] But hey, he can do whatever he wants.
[D]
He texted me and asked if I [G] wanted to sing a duet with him.
I [D] said, of course.
And he asked me what song I wanted to do, and I thought of Walkin'.
It's not one of the first records I was aware of.
Well, that's the [A] great thing about someone like Willie.
He's got such a [G] huge catalog, you can always kind of [D] discover stuff.
[A] [Bm]
[F#m] So many people [G] have recorded this [D] song and sung this song,
and for me [E] to be able to say that I sang it [A] with Willie Nelson is pretty awesome.
As if [D] Willie wasn't talent enough to have that [Bm] many amazing [F#m] singers, songwriters, [G] artists on the [F#m] record.
It's really amazing.
[Em] I'm very honored.
Turning [D] 80, he wanted [A] to, you [D] know, it was a manly thing.
I want to get all these girls, I don't care [A] how old I am, I can still get the girls.
I'm still, you know, they're all running [Bm] after me.
And we [E] all did.
I love [Am] Willie's choices.
[G] They're my favorite [Am] singers.
I'm really pleased to be [D] a part of it.
I think it's going to be a great record.
Willie chose a great group [A] of women.
He's got good taste.
[Bm] It's a thrill to be [E] on an album with all these [A] other women.
I always have to pinch myself [Bm] sometimes when I get in a situation like [E] this.
Like, [G] that's cool.
It's really humbling to be [D] a part of such company.
This album [E] really highlights, I think, the [G] best female vocalist in the industry right now.
[D]
To me, Willie is one of [G] the giants of music.
I mean, he's 80 [Gm] years old and [G] still going strong.
[C] I just love that Willie still [G] does it, that he chooses [E] to still [Em] go out and connect with people.
[C] [G] Willie has definitely solidified just [Dm] a huge, [D] gleaming, sparkling spot in not [E] just country music history, but music [Dm] history in general.
I think [Em] he's one of the architects [E] of the great American art form of [D] country music.
You think of 20th century music, [F#m] you're going to think [A] of Willie Nelson.
I think Willie [Am] Nelson will be remembered as one of the [D] greatest of all time.
I just love Willie.
I'm just thankful [G] in my life that I got to know him and to call him my [C] friend.
Because that is [C#] greatness.
It truly [G] is.
I sometimes wonder [A] if they aren't going to [D] carve him up there on [G] Mount Rushmore.
He didn't really [D] have to be president, but he's had as much of an [A] influence probably as any of those people up [G] there.
He's [E] just Willie.
To the end [A] of the world, you'll be [F#] mine.
[G]
