Hello friends, this is Anthony from StevesSnacks.com.
And yes, I'm going to teach you that lick from Scuttlebuttlin.
It's probably one of the most requested things that I've had in the five years that I've been doing this.
And I'm doing it today because basically I want to get your attention.
I just redid the entire StevesSnacks website.
A bunch of new stuff.
You can see what gear I'm using in every free lesson and every gear video.
You should definitely go check it out.
Or you can just stay here and watch this, but this will be posted over there too.
I'm going to attempt to teach you the opening and main lick of that song.
There's a lot of debate about whether or not Stevie uses bends or slides.
But after some careful research, I am prepared to say that, I don't know.
I'm just going to teach you the way that I hear it.
[Eb] Basically, we're in the key of [Gb] E flat here.
[Eb]
[N] E flat tuning.
That puts our main box down here.
The open position.
You're going to start with a slide from 3 to 5, or 2 to [Bb] 4 on the G string.
[Eb]
[Ab] Follow through open B, open E string.
[Ebm]
And here's the tricky part because you've got to come [Bb] back to the B string open and then slide from 3 to [Db] 5.
[Eb]
[Bb] Then [Bbm] [Eb]
[Ab] we're going to jump back up here to the open E string.
[Db]
[Bb] And go open E, [Bbm] third [Bb] fret open on B string.
And what you're [A] probably used to playing is a slide [Ab] from 3 to 2 on the G [Gb] string, open.
[Eb] Then down to the second fret of the D string.
[Bbm] [Eb] Open E string.
[Ebm] That [Eb] chord that you're playing there is the second fret of the D string, G string on the first fret.
And then barring the third fret of the B and [Ebm] E string.
[F] So I'm going to tell [Eb] you something that you're probably doing wrong and you didn't even know it.
When you're making this descent here, [Bbm] [A] [Gb] [Eb]
there's a tiny little bit of magic sauce in there.
That makes it sound different when Stevie plays it than when most of us play it.
Because it's just a tiny little [C] detail that's very easy to miss.
[Eb] Instead of walking [Bbm] down and [A] [Ab] doing this slide down, [N] actually start here at the second fret and do a quick slide up and back down.
[Gb] [Eb] [A] [Ab]
[Eb] Other than that it's exactly the same.
So again, instead of going, [Bbm] [A] [Ab] [Gb]
[Eb] [Ab] you're going to go.
[Bbm] [Ab]
[Gb] [Eb] [Ab] [Bbm] [Eb]
And [C] that slide's got to be really, really [Ebm] fast.
But it's a little bit of magic dust in there that just makes it sound a little bit more lively.
Now, the points of debate, as I can tell from what I've seen on the internet,
is that some people think he started with a bend here [Eb] instead of a [Bb] slide.
[Ab] I don't really care how you do [Eb] it.
It sounds good either way.
The other way I've heard it explained is instead of a slide there, [Gb] he did a bend.
[Eb] That I'm pretty sure is wrong based on the videos that I've seen.
It's pretty obvious that he's doing a slide there.
But if you can get away with doing it with a bend, I'm not going to yell at you.
The hardest part, though, is [Bb] this [Bbm] little picking thing here.
[Eb]
[D] You see how I'm picking that?
[Bbm]
You're [Eb]
going to have to get a lot of back and forth [Bb] action between the E string and the B string there.
[Ebm]
[Eb] [Ebm] Okay.
So [N] just because you know the notes, don't assume that that means that you're going to be able to play it at the speed that he does.
What you might want to do is get yourself a slowdown program.
There's a great one for the Mac.
It's actually made by a Stevie Snacks customer.
It's called Capo.
Check that out.
There's other ones for the PC that you can use, lots of them for the iPhone and iPad and stuff like that.
Slow it down to about, you're probably going to have to go to at least 50% to start, and then slowly work your way up.
To be honest, I'm teaching this lesson, and I can't even play it at full speed, so don't get discouraged.
I don't even know if you're meant to play it at full speed.
Just do the best that you can.
But anyway, that's the opening lick to Scuttlebuttlin.
Scuttlebuttlin.
I can't even pronounce the name of the song right.
Scuttlebutton.
[Eb]
If you like this lesson, head over to steviesnacks.com.
The entire site is redone.
Lots of good stuff, lots of gear information.
Just, it took me a lot of work, so go check it out.
Anyway, happy Free Lesson Friday, and until next time, thanks for watching.
