[F] Hi, [N] this is Robin Ford and I'm here at Carter's Vintage Guitars with my friend [G] Jeff McElhaine
who [Eb] came down from Brooklyn [G] about a week ago [Eb] and I'm producing his record [N] here in Nashville.
And Jeff had never been to Carter's Guitars before so he said, you know,
what do you say we go take [Eb] a peek?
And [Bb] I was like, sure.
So we [F] came down to Carter's [G] three days ago.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
And tell them what happened [B] when it came for you.
[Bb] Well, it came for me and then we were looking at [Gb] gold tops for [Eb]
Robin and we saw this one which is a 54
[Db] and [Bb]
had some [Gb] damage.
You can see where somebody put a vibrolo on it [Gm] at one point.
But it's a great guitar.
And so [Ebm] what happened [Bbm] was Robin had this guitar, which was his, [D] that [Eb] 52 gold top,
[Gm] which I had acquired just a little while ago.
And the neck is just a little small for my hand.
I have kind of big [G] hands and so I like a little more thickness, a little more width.
[Fm] But [E] [Bbm] I hope you [Ebm] could see by the playing that we just did that [Abm] this guitar plays well, very well, and sounds great.
And it's beautiful [Bb] too.
1952.
[Ab] [Bbm] And a little bit of scratching on the back.
And [G] [Db] nothing [Gb] to bother your hands, you know, on [G] the back.
You get [Bbm] the right bridge on it too, you update [Bb] it with [Ab] the.
[Bb] That's right.
[Eb] This, the actual bridge [F] is in the case.
[Dbm] It was, is it called a [Dm] trapeze?
I think so.
Yeah, [F] that's trapeze.
They call it a trapeze.
It's the first year, 1952.
[Gm] Is that correct?
I believe so.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
So anyway, the trapeze is [Ab] really hard to [Bb] play.
It's just, it made [Ab] no sense and they corrected it pretty quickly.
And [Eb] so in the meantime, [Gm] this is a custom [Bbm] made [G] bridge [Bb] by Joe Glazer, another one of the great [Eb] guitar [A] people here in Nashville, Tennessee, works [G] on guitars.
[F]
[Bb] And this is a custom made tailpiece so that it feels more like a wraparound, which this one is.
And I like the wraparound, [Eb] certainly over the trapeze.
The trapeze, pretty much, you [Bb] don't really want it.
It's a nice vintage thing.
And you would own [Eb] it if you owned this guitar.
But anyway, this is what you want on here.
It's [Fm] really a good guitar.
This is a [E] very good guitar.
Well, the original trapeze is one that is replaced with [G] those really high posts that make it sort of unplayable.
So it's a great guitar once you put these on.
That's where Joe designed those great bridges.
If you try one with the original thing, this is how you'd want to do it if you got [Eb] the guitar.
You'd definitely upgrade it to that and then it's a player.
You would make the change.
[Bb] [Ab] By the way, [Eb]
Jeff and I are conducting a guitar camp in the [Bbm] Catskills, [Eb] [D] Full [Bbm] Moon Resort, in Big Indian, New York,
which is up in the [E] Catskill Mountains.
It's five [Bbm] nights, three days of solid teaching with Jeff [Ab]
[Eb] and myself and our good friend and guitarist, Rick Wheeler.
[Gm] It's August 28th through September 1st?
[Gb] Yep, this year.
Coming up pretty soon.
So hopefully you'll [Eb] see this video [Bbm] beforehand and maybe you'll come join us.
You can find it on the Robin [F] Ford Guitar Dojo on my website, robinford .com.
