So I want to [B] show you some [Em] voicings [E] that I use a lot in my rhythm playing.
[F] Something like this.
[B] [E] These things work really nicely.
What I like about them is [D] [A] [Em]
[A] [N] they're on the low end of the guitar,
which you don't really necessarily hear a lot of that from guitar players these days.
Especially after people got more and more into lead work,
the rhythm playing kind of went out the window.
Being a soloist and really enjoying being a soloist,
and moving towards rhythm playing more and more, and really taking
I'm going to talk a lot about rhythm.
It's become just about my favorite topic.
Again, because you just don't hear a lot of strong rhythm playing out there these days.
So I like to turn guitar players' attention back towards chords, and pocket, and groove.
So I was [E] playing something
about rhythm.
[Db]
[Bm] [Em]
[A]
[Em] [G]
So [E] that's basically all in E, right?
E7 or E raised 9.
[Em] [A] [Bm] Pentatonic [G] scale obviously works with all that.
[E]
And I want to show you some chord voicings that I use a ton.
E is [Em] probably every guitar player's favorite key,
because you really seem to have the entire range of the guitar in front of you [D] there.
You've [Am] got the harmonics open to [E] you.
The lowest note on the guitar to the highest note on the guitar.
So I'm going to focus on kind of the low end of the instrument here.
[A]
Basically what I'm [E] going to play is E, [A] A, [Em] G.
[A]
There's A [D] again.
[E]
E.
So [Gb] it's E, A, and D triads that I'm going to [Ab] play for you here.
And [D] just use them across the [E] instrument.
[A]
[Em] [A]
[E] There's that G chord as well, right?
E, [A] [Em] A, G.
That kind of takes it minor.
[E] Now it's sort of a minor chord instead of a major chord.
[A] [E]
It [Em] [A] [E] works in a blues context.
If you play [Em] those notes, the open strings on the guitar, you just play E minor, right?
[Bb] Because that's a G [G] triad.
[E] So we're using G in here as well.
[Em]
[A] [D] [E] [A] E, [Em] A, G, [A] [D] A, [E] D, [D] E, [Em]
G, [A] [E] A, F.
[A]
[Em] [E] [A]
[E] [G] [A] [Em] [A]
[E]
[D] [E] [Bm] [A]
[E] [E]
[A] [Em] [A]
[E]
[D] [A]
[E] Now that was a couple of different voicings.
So the D [A] chord, the A chord, with E in the root like that.
[E]
That's E as well.
[A]
[E]
[Bm] [E]
[G] [A]
[E] [Gbm] [E] [D]
[A] [E] [D] [E]
[Db] [E]
I just love that low, woody sound, you know?
Hendrix did a lot of [F] that.
Like, when cries marry.
[C] [E]
[C] [Bb] [E]
[Am] [Eb] [B]
[Fm] [Db] [Eb] [E] [F]
[Ebm] [B] [Fm]
[C] [Bbm] [F]
The
[G] sound of the guitar is just wonderful [E] in these cases where you're [Ebm] really hearing [E] [Fm] air [C] in the sound.
Strats and Tele's are real good for that.
Other guitars, [N]
what can anyone say?
It just has this kind of clarity, but depth.
It's a beautiful thing.
So, [E]
back to my thing here.
[A]
[D] [E] One other chord I'll play, one other voicing I'll play [D] in a bit.
[Em]
[A] [D] A, [G] D, and [Em] G.
[E] [Em]
[E] [Em]
[E] [Em]
[E] Fourths are a series of notes [Gb] four steps away from each other.
One, [Ab] two, three, [A] four, if you play a major scale.
[D]
[G] [C] [F]
[Em] We'll limit [E] ourselves to this one [Em] here.
[E] [D] [A] [Em] [A]
[E] [Em] [E]
[Em] [E] [Em]
[E] Don't be afraid to just spank the [Em] guitar.
Just play. Enjoy.
