[C] [G#] Well, well, well, yeah, [C] buddy, y'all know what time it is?
It's [Dm] Songwriter Series time, hosted by my good friend Jack Ingram.
But Jack has a cool new record.
[G] Lately, he's chosen a few of his favorite full-length acoustic performances from these sessions to showcase.
So who's up this [D] time?
Who's there, Jack?
Let us know.
Muchas gracias, Senor Benson.
[A] Rob Baird's up next on my Songwriter Series.
[G] Originally out of his music-rich hometown of Memphis, Tennessee,
[D] Rob now calls Austin, Texas, home.
He's almost a decade into a music career down here that has led him to the creative peak
that is his 2016 album called Wrong Side of the River.
So with that, here he is, Rob Baird.
Man, I wrote a good lot of special songs.
I wrote with my [A] friend Rustin Kelly.
I was lucky enough to enjoy a flight from [D] Nashville [C#m] to Houston to [E] Austin [A] to Midland in one day.
[E] And then I went there for like, [A] I don't know, 12 hours and [Dm] flew back to [D] Nashville.
And then [Dm] Rustin was the first person [A] I was writing with.
So I was thinking a lot about West Texas and [E] how interesting it is out there at times,
boom or bust, [A] oil situations, and small [D] towns in West Texas and windmills and all this stuff.
And I [A] think I wrote maybe like a [E] half-verse to that, and Rustin took to it [A] that next day.
And it was actually snowing on Music Row, [D] so no one was down there.
And we went into Waylon [A] Jennings' old studio in the old Sony building and wrote that song in like [A#m] 45 minutes.
He was playing [E] the piano.
We walked outside and [Dm] where is everybody else?
[A] It was just one of these really surreal, special moments when you can knock out a song that quickly
and just have it work, and [F] that song just kind of [F#] holds a special place in my heart because of that.
I ain't got no expectations, something in life just gets in the way.
[B] [F#] Why don't we just roll the dice [C#] and head down the [F#] interstate?
Ain't you [B]
tired of [F#] this town?
[D#m]
Life just seems [C#] to sink into the [B] ground.
[F#] We were born to be [D#m] better than this, worn out [C#] steel and leather.
[B]
Pack your [F#] bag, Maria, [D#m]
throw them in the [C#] trunk.
[B] Think [F#] it's time we roll the dice [C#] and hold for a round of good luck.
[F#m]
[F#] Look at you, Maria,
[B] staring out [F#] into the wind.
Wondering if [D#m] you never [F#]
left, [B] might be a bigger [F#] sin.
[B] There was a time [F#] when all the lights of [D#m] these streets [C#] couldn't hold [B] your dreams.
So come on, baby, [F#] just roll them dice, [C#] get the hell out of [F#] Abilene.
And [B] it's raining in [F#] this town.
[D#m] Life just seems [C#] to sink into the [B] ground.
We [F#] were born to be better [D#m] than this, worn out [C#] steel and leather.
[B] Pack your [F#] bag, Maria,
[D#m] throw them in the [C#] trunk.
[B] Think it's time [F#] we [C#] roll the dice and hold for a round of [F#] good luck.
[B]
What you gotta lose [F#] anyway, don't you [D#m] think it's time?
Don't you [C#] think it's time to [F#] get away?
[D#m] [F#]
[D#m] [B] Burn out of [F#] this town, [D#m] pull ourselves [C#] back onto solid [B] ground.
We [F#] were born to be better [D#m] than this, worn [C#] out steel and leather.
[B] Ride with me, [F#] Maria, [D#m] roll out like [C#] a dust.
[B] Think it's [F#] time we roll the [C#] dice and hope for a [D#m] round of good luck.
