R&B Guitar Lesson | 4 Keys to Authentic Feel chords
Start Jamming...
[D]
Hey guys, this is Rick at Tasty Guitar.
Today I'm going to demonstrate how you can create an authentic feel in this style just
starting with a basic lick over two chords and then adding four different layers of articulation,
four different techniques to create something extraordinary.
Let's get started.
Alright, so the chord progression we're going to play over today is [G] just D to [D] A7sus in 6-8 time.
Something like this.
[G] You can [D] call that G over A if you like.
Okay, we're going to start by just playing a very [G] simple little fill.
[D]
[Em] [Bm] [D]
Very simple, nothing special.
[G]
Here we are [D] one more time.
One, two, three.
[A] [Bm] [D]
Alright, [Em] so the first thing I'm going to do to try to inject some soul into this basic
lick is to play some of those notes staccato or really short and cut off.
So here's our basic [A] lick again.
[Bm] [Em] [Bm]
[D] [G] All kind of long notes.
[A] What I'm going to do is I'm going to play three of these staccato.
[D]
[G] Again, that D note was really [A] cut off.
[D]
And kind of accented as well.
Played it a little bit louder than the other notes.
[C] [Bm] Again [A] here on this little double stop.
[Bm]
[Em] [Bm] [D]
Again on that F sharp at the end.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [Bm] [D]
Now here's what [G] it'll sound like with the chords [D] behind it.
[Em]
[D]
[Am] [Bm] [D]
Alright, [E] another really little [A] subtle but effective thing you can do to add some feel
and a little bit of a funky flavor into your licks is by using ghost notes.
Now I'm doing this by hitting muted strings.
[D] [G] Right there, hit [A] the open D string but muted.
[Bm]
[D] [A] [Bm] [D] [Em]
[Bm] [D]
Again before these notes.
[A] Now you may find this easier to pull off finger style but you can do it with pick.
[Bm] [Em] [Bm] [D]
[Bm]
[Em] [Bm] [D]
[A] Another great little simple thing you can do is use slides wherever possible.
[Bm] [A]
[D]
[Bm] [A] [Bm]
[D] [A] One last thing you should try to use whenever possible are putting in slurs like hammer-ons
and pull-offs.
[Bm] [D] [Em] [D]
Right there from that A to the B note.
Really quick little hammer-on.
[Bm] [G] [D] [Em] [D]
Okay, so now let's take a look at what we started with and [G] where we ended up and what
the [D] difference is.
[Em] [Bm]
[D]
[A] [G] [D]
Again.
[Am] [D]
[A] [Bm] [D]
Alright guys, thank [Ab] you so much for coming by [G] today and checking out this lesson on authentic
feel in the R&B style.
I really suggest kind of looking at your own playing and if you're not using any of these
techniques yet, you really need to put it in there because feel is everything.
