Hey guys today's video is about how to improve your groove.
[D] I used to think having a good groove was innate
It was something you either had or you didn't have but it's not true
It's something you [Gb] can work on and improve and [Gm] the way you do that is to make good friends with metronome
I know some of you hear [Bb] that word and think oh god, that's just boring as hell
Well, I've come up with [Ab] seven exercises that will challenge [Gm] you and at the same time will improve your time feel
So [E] I've got it over two separate videos because it's a bit long, but I hope you enjoy it
And let's get right to it
so the first exercise I refer [Gb] to is the swing two and four and the [Bb] reason that is is because
[E] You're gonna have the metronome beat out beats two and four [Bb] of a four four measure mimicking
Drummers hi [Gb]-hat jazz that's what gives it its strong swing feel [N] so when you do this because there's only two beats out of four
Being played by the metronome
You need to set the metronome at half the speed that you want to play at so I want to play at
180 beats a minute I got my metronome set to 90 beats a minute and it's half 90 is half of 180
Simple math right?
Okay, so this is beats two and four so you need to fill in one and [Bb] three so
Two four two four fill in one and three four two four one two three four one
Once you're able to do that
[Gb] Just play a scale over it.
Great way to practice scales one [G] two three
[E] [F] [E]
[F] [E] [C]
[Am] [E]
[G] [D]
So
That's one [Bbm] way to do it here's another way coming up okay, so the next [Gm] application and basically the the [Gb] real application of this
[Gm] Exercise is swing two and four is to use it over a tune
[D] And this is the way that I practice anytime I learn a new tune [Gb] anytime.
I just play for fun
[Bb] So again, I get the [E] metronome set to 90 because I'm going to be playing the tempo of 180
Because it's only beating on two and four from [D] right so here's how you do it one [Gb] two
[F] [Bb]
You
All [F] [G] [Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm] [C]
[Cm] [Gm]
[Cm] [Bb] [Gb]
[G] [A] [Db] [C]
[F] [Gbm] [F]
[N] right, so I improvised there a little bit at the end, but you get the general idea
It's a great [E] way to practice tunes, and it's a great way to improve your swing field.
Let's move on to the next one
Okay, so this [A] next exercise.
[D] I call the slow jam, but I could just as easily call it torture because it is really a pain
[Bb] I got this from a really [F] phenomenal guitar player named Ben [N] Monder and what it
Involves is setting the metronome at a really really slow rate
And then you play something like a scale chords, whatever
Right on the click, [Gm] and I'm talking real slow tempo so his example was 20 [N] beats a minute
And that's one click every three seconds
really hard to do
Do it accurately you have to subdivide and which that's the key
Subdivision or subdividing being able to do that is the key to having a good time feel because you can really
[Bb] Feel the grid you can you can really feel where beats belong
Okay, so I got my metronome set here to 20 beats [G] per minute
Which is like I said one beat every three seconds, and now I got a subdivide this and give this a shot
[Ab] Okay, I think I got it.
So [Gm] I'm gonna play the scale now two three just just [A] on the click [Gm] there we go
[A]
[Bb]
[C] [D]
[E] [Bb]
[Gm] Alright, [Gb] not bad.
It's a little like watching paint dry.
I [Bb] realize but this is really really good practice.
Give it a shot
exercise number three I call [E] the four on four off and
The reason is is you have you need [A] something like a an app like time guru, which I [G] have here
I've got it reviewed on [D] my website as well really great practice tool
Or you can use the sequencer [Gb] or drum machine whatever you have that will click for four beats and then be silent for four beats
[A] And then you improvise
Over that so you have to keep track during the silence.
That's that's the idea behind this again
It's all about you know learning how to feel time [C] two three four one
So now I pick a key to something like [B] a minor I play freely over it
I want to make [E] sure that I'm hitting that downbeat of the home on to
You [Ab] [G]
[A] [D] [A]
[Am] [D] [Gbm]
[A] [D]
[Ab] [A] [F]
[D] [G] [D]
[D] [E]
[C]
[E] [G] get [Gbm]
[Am] [A] [Gb]
[Gb] [Db]
[C]
[E] [F] the idea I [N] could do that for forever
It's a hell of a lot of fun really great way to practice so
These are the [Bb] first three exercises and the [E] next four are in another video
[Gbm] Which is available here on YouTube [C] and all of this is written up on my website so much sound
[Gb] Calm hope you had fun
