There are a lot of different kinds of mando guitars and what I'm interested in this video is the one that Ry Cooder plays
Which is a Vox
Vox has kind of a weird bridge as you can see [A#] here as an adjustable truss rod
[E] in a zero fret
Based on videos and listening I believe Ry has modified his mando guitar as follows
He's removed the tailpiece cover changed the pickup selector switch for a knob
And I think he's changed the pickups.
He also moved the tailpiece for the lower three strings
Towards the back of the guitar and the most important difference is the strings and tuning he tunes the mando guitar to open a a e a
C sharp e a and only the first two strings have unison pair the rest are single strings
Set up a mando guitar
Likewise you might want to start with a phantom
Which [D] is the cheapest [B] easiest way to go probably they go [E] for $300 and up [D] on eBay
The scale [E] length on these mando [G#] guitars is about like a guitar [A] capo at the eighth fret
[E] But they're designed to be tuned an octave higher
So intonation and string alignment is [D] a real problem
I [A] think that Ry might have moved the tailpiece on his guitar away from the bridge to minimize the sharpening
[E]
Intonation [Dm] effect that you would [Am] get with the shorter string
[E] As you go up the neck on the lower heavier [A] strings
[E]
And the bridge is just unable to compensate for that.
I use medium strings [D] on the upper [A] end
the first strings are 12 and light strings on the bottom the sixth string is
point oh four six
Phantom mando guitars really aren't very good instruments, especially when they're strung and tuned like this
The bridge really should be moved back away from the nut almost a quarter inch and the tailpiece should go way back
[G] Which would help the intonation if you didn't want to use the ashtray cover
Pickups should probably be replaced and the new ones better aligned with [N] the
