Hi, my name is Kirk Fletcher and I want to talk to [D] you about some blues comping ideas in B-flat.
[C] Alright, here's a few things I picked up from the great [G] Robin Ford.
[Abm]
[Gm] [F]
[Bbm]
[Gm] [Dm] [E]
[Cm] [Eb] [F]
[F]
[A] [Gm]
[G] [A] [Gm]
[E] [Cm] [Db]
[G] [Eb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Bb] [Eb] [Ab] [F]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Abm] [Gm] I don't know, [A] something like that.
[Ab] [Bb] [Ab]
[G] [G] I like to have a whole big handful of ideas over the different chords, [Am] like for your I chord.
[D]
[Gm] [Ab] [G]
[F] [F]
[Eb] [Bb] [G]
[E] [G] You know, that [Em] kind of stuff.
It's a lot [A] of fun too, because it keeps it interesting for the rhythm guitar player.
It also adds excitement and gives you some more harmonic ideas [G] to play over, you know, in just a regular B-flat blues.
So yeah, I like that one.
[Ab] Sometimes you strum your [Gm] guitar chords in a certain [Bb] way too, like that.
Oh [G] yeah, yeah.
Why?
You know, [C] that's so fun.
I never get asked that [F] question.
It goes back really quick, I'll just say, you know, this Robin Ford and Jimmy Witherspoon [A] live record that came out in the 70s or something like that.
That kind [Ab] of is what got the ball started and then I [G] listened to big bands and stuff.
If you're playing the [Bm] swing blues, there's one idea you can [Gm] go like
[C] [G]
[Dm] [Eb] [F]
[Dm] [Gm] [D] [G]
[Gm]
[Db] [Gm] [Ab] That's one way of playing it. And [Gm] then
[G] [Bbm]
[E] [Gm] [A]
[Cm] [Eb]
[G] [Eb] [Bb]
[Eb] [G] [Bb]
[Eb] [Db]
[G] That's another thing.
And then for a funky blues, sometimes you can play like
[D]
[Bb]
[F] [Eb] [Gm]
[E]
[F] [G] [F]
That's [C] another thing, I didn't talk about that either, this little thing to give it some [D] movement.
[Eb] [Ab] [Eb] [C]
[A]
[Eb] [Bb]
[Fm] You know, just for [Gb] movement, you know, and it's real fun and kind of makes everybody smile.
[G] I like it when you do the brush [Ab] stroke too.
Oh!
[Gm]
What is that and why do you do that?
Because I heard a big band do [Em] it.
I don't know, like Count Basie, you know.
You hear those guys, the horn section, [Bb] you know.
[E] So I'm just trying to imitate like a horn section [G] kind of thing, you know.
And once again, give like the blues some movement, you know, when you're comping behind somebody.
[D] [Eb]
Oh yeah, [Bm] there's another thing [Em] on the slow blues. Man!
[D] [Bbm]
[Eb] [D] That's something I got from T-Bone [Db] Walker, you know.
[D] [Bbm]
[Eb] [Bb] [Dbm]
[Eb] [D] [Gm]
[F] [Eb]
[Db] [D]
[Gb] [Bbm]
[D] [Bb]
[Gb] [Bbm]
[Fm] [Gm] [Eb]
[Dm] [F]
[E] [Eb]
[Bb]
[Eb] [Gb] [Ab]
I love that [A] color.
Kirk Fletcher, ladies and gentlemen, [E] right on, thank you.
