[E] Now we're going to play a solo in a second.
[Gm] We're going to learn [Fm] how to echo.
This [G] solo is all about [C] echoing.

[C] [Fm] [C] Okay, [Ab] there is Killer Joe, the head, and an improv solo, or a transcribed solo I should say.
And the head is very easy to do, as you can tell.
Remember the [E] Quincy Jones version of this, walking in space?
[N] What a cool groove.
You [Cm] have the bass.
[Gm] [C] This track is a little [Bb] too fast.
It was done [Bbm] [C] many years ago [N] when I was green.
Now I'm old.
Anyway, the track is a little fast, also a little out of tune, sorry about that.
But the solo is still good.
What we're trying to do here is to show, to take a statement, to take a [Eb] cell or a motif,
[E]
and echo [Fm] it a whole step lower.
And we've been working in our Jazz Improv Theory course, [N] a new series that I've been putting together.
And the goal of this particular lesson is to get you thinking about what you're playing
and just making one little statement and then echoing it a whole step lower.
And remember, if you're just talking about a one bar phrase, that's hard for guitar players
to do because we like to keep playing.
Sax players take a breath every once in a while.
Now even in the bridge, we play a statement and then we echo it a half step lower.
And we'll do that throughout the bridge.
So this song is perfect for understanding that concept of playing a motif and echoing
it, echoing it a half step or a whole step lower.
So I think it's a very valuable lesson.
And I start my theory or my guitar course, Volume 1, off with this lesson.
Now the solo isn't too bad, but it's technically demanding.
There's no question about it.
But it's something that's doable and I think they're good licks.
So it's stuff that if you invest the time in, I don't think you're going to be wasting your time.
But anyway, let's get into the solo.
And in the head, I'll show you how I play it.
And let's start learning this idea and focusing our attention on one bar phrases.
Here we go.
Hold on to your hats.
Basically the intro to the [Am] song is a scene 13.
