Start Jamming...
[Bm]
[A] Hi, George here.
Welcome to this video where I show you how I play JJ Cale's After Midnight on guitar and harmonica.
Okay, so we're going to go through the guitar chords, strumming pattern, go through to talk
about the harmonica, the key I'm using, and then we'll jam it through.
Okay?
So, starting with the guitar chords, we start with A, C, [C]
[D] D, [A] back to A.
Okay, we also have [E] E7.
Okay, and [A] those are all the chords in the song.
So, for a strumming pattern, I'll give you a little example of how I strum it.
[C] [D]
Okay, so let me count that for you.
So let's take that slow.
One, two, three, four, and, and, two, three, and, four, and.
[C] One, two, three, [D] four, one, two, three, four, [A] one, two, three, four, and, four, and, one,
two, three, four, and.
Okay?
A little tricky maybe to get started, but another thing you can also do is you can play roots.
So, sometimes I'll do this.
[C]
[D] [A]
So, for the harmonica, I'm playing a D harmonica, so we're in the key of A, but I'm playing
a D harmonica.
So, the reason for that, a D harmonica, when you draw on the second, third, fourth, and
fifth notes, you make an A7 chord.
And that's what we want [A#] when we're playing.
We're playing in the key of A, but we want to have that, that dominant seventh to just
[D] give it that bluesy feel.
And it also bases it on a bend.
When you're playing the harmonica, you're bending, or not bending, you're drawing these notes.
And it's easier to bend on a draw.
And then, so you [C#] can, you can take that A7 chord and bend the heck out of it and have
a lot of fun.
Okay?
So, D harmonica, with that draw on those, on the second, third, and fourth, second,
third, fourth, and fifth holes, gives you the A7 chord.
Okay.
So, let's just, let's just jam this out.
So it's three chords for the main part, and we'll throw the E7 in there.
Okay?
Two, three, [A] four.
