[D] Hey, George here.
Welcome [Bb] to this video where I show you how to play [Db] The River by Bruce Springsteen on
guitar and [C]
harmonica.
So [Bb] the version we're going to do here is the, we'll stick close to the [D] studio version.
[Db] Okay, so it starts off [A] basically three parts to the song.
We have the intro,
[Gb] we have a verse, [G] and the progression for [Ab] the verse is the same as the
harmonica [B] solo in the middle.
[F] We have [Ab] four verses and then we have a chorus.
Okay, so let's start with [G] the intro.
We go start with [Em] E minor, to G, [G]
[D] to D, [C] to C.
[Bb] And [D] as [Db] often, this is also [C] played as a C9
or C add [Bb] 9, it's C major and [D] we play the D.
That's going to be played here on the [Db] third
fret, second string.
[D] [C] We don't actually need our first finger here on the [E] first [C] fret.
It's just easy to play that way.
[E] I think [C] I'll probably, well I'll probably interchange those.
So anyways, so where [E] were we?
We were at E [G] minor, G, [D] D, [C] to C or C add 9.
And then we walk down to A, so we go from the C and then we [Bm] go fifth string, second fret.
So [C]
[B] B and [Am] then just take it off and it's A minor.
So A minor, [G] then we go to G and [C] to C.
[A] Okay, so let's go through that and I'm going to
add the harmonica.
[Db] Let's start slow.
I'm not going to talk out each [Ab] note to blow and draw.
[Am] I'll just put it up here [Ab] so you can see that.
So let's go through [A] that.
[Dm] Let's start slow.
[E]
[G] [D]
[C] [A]
[G]
[C]
[D] Okay, so I'm just doing on the strumming pattern [Am] on the album, it's arpeggiated, [Ab] it's
picked, but I'm just going to keep it simple.
[G] We're just going to play on the downbeats.
[D] So let's run that a few times.
So you can play along.
[Eb]
[C] Three, [E] four.
[G]
[D] [C]
[A] [G]
[C]
[Em] [G]
[D] [C]
[Am]
[G] [C]
[G]
[D]
[C] [Em] [Am]
[G] [C]
[E] [G]
[D]
[C] [Am]
[G] [C]
Okay, so there's the [G] intro.
[F] Okay, so let's go through the [G] verses, [Bb] which is also the same progression as the harmonica solo.
So let's just do [B] the same thing as I [Eb] did for the intro.
[D] I'll play the chords slowly and put the harmonica tabs up here while we [Db] do it.
Okay, [G] let's see if we can make this happen here.
[B] So this is the harmonica solo, it's the same [A] chords as the verse and this comes in after
two [Gb] verses and two choruses.
[Eb] Okay, let's give this a [Bbm] go.
Three, [E] four.
[G] [D]
[C] [Em]
[G] [C]
[G] [C]
[G] [D]
[Em] [Am]
[G]
[C]
[A] Okay, [D] so that's the harmonica solo.
[B] Okay, so [D] the last thing left to do would be [Gb] the chords for the chorus.
We have [Em] E minor, [C] C,
[D] D, [G] G.
[Em] E minor,
[C] C, [D] D, and back [Em] to C.
And that's the C add 9, that one.
[C] Okay, so that's all the chords, [Eb] that's all the patterns.
You have the [G] intro, [D] verses, chorus, harmonica solos, [F] and that should be everything you [E] need
to put that together.
Okay, I'll [F] put the tabs and lyrics and chords and stuff on the website so you can look at
that there as [Db] well.
So thanks for watching the video.
I hope you enjoyed [F] it, I hope you got something for it.
If you know somebody who it could help, send it along.
Leave a message, I'd love to get your comments.
Alright, have a [Db] great day.
Cheers, [A] peace.

[Bb] And [D] as [Db] often, this is also [C] played as a C9

That's going to be played here on the [Db] third

[D] I'll play the chords slowly and put the harmonica tabs up here while we [Db] do it.

[B] So this is the harmonica solo, it's the same [A] chords as the verse and this comes in after

_ _ _ _ _ [A] _ Okay, [D] so that's the harmonica solo. _

[D] _ _ D, _ _ [G] G.
_ _ [Em] _ E minor, _ _
[C] _ C, _ _ [D] _ D, _ and back [Em] to C. _ _ _
And that's the C add 9, that one.
_ [C] _ Okay, so that's all the chords, [Eb] that's all the patterns.
You have the [G] intro, _ [D] verses, chorus, harmonica solos, [F] and that should be everything you [E] need
to put that together.
_ Okay, I'll [F] put the tabs and lyrics and chords and stuff on the website so you can look at
that there as [Db] well.
So thanks for watching the video.
I hope you enjoyed [F] it, I hope you got something for it.
_ If you know somebody who it could help, send it along.
Leave a message, I'd love to get your comments.
Alright, have a [Db] great day.
