This is the intro, slide guitar intro to [B] My Sweet Lord, one [Cm] of George's most famous guitar lines.
Now, nobody really knows how [Eb] George played My Sweet [A] Lord.
When you [Eb]
have your guitar in normal tuning, the notes don't fall under [Gb] the slide as elegantly as he's clearly playing it on the record.
[Eb] You have to jump the slide around too much.
Now, I don't [Ab] know if George did this, but I'm going to recommend this trick, which is what I'm doing to play it.
Keep the guitar in standard tuning, except for the first string.
If you tune that first [B] string down to D, [Eb]
then things just fall a little more effortlessly under the slide.
[N]
OK, so do that.
Get that E string tuned down to D, and then let's get into the tune itself, the introduction itself.
We're in the key of F-sharp minor because of the capo and the acoustic guitar part,
[Eb] and we're going to start on the first [C] string, 18th fret.
Slide into it from about two frets [Eb] below, and then stop it.
[Abm] Stop it by resting the pick back on the string again.
[C]
Bring the slide down [F] two frets to 16, pick it, and slide down [B] two frets to 14.
[Ab] [Eb]
So you've got 18, 16, 14 in this.
Stop.
[F] Bring the slide back to 16, pick, [E] and slide to 14.
Slide back from 14 to 16, [Eb] hold on the first string, stop it again.
Bring the slide back to [E] 14, pick 14 of the first string, 14 of the second string, [Dbm] [Ab] and then pick 14 of the second string again.
But [B] somewhere in there, [Eb] you want to stop that first string ringing.
I tend to do it after the first pick of the second string.
[Ab]
[N] I'm stopping too quickly or it kills the fluidity of the music.
[Bb] [Eb]
I played one, followed by two, it stopped one, and played two [G] again.
[Eb]
All right, that's our first phrase.
[Bb]
[F] Now we're going to repeat it exactly the same, [Eb] except that after we pick that second pick of the second string, 14th [Db] fret,
[Eb] we're going to pick the first string again at 14, and second string again at 14, sliding down to 12.
Same as the first phrase plus the addition of [G] [Eb] that phrase at the end.
And notice what happened there, which is something I avoid when I'm [G] playing it,
that as I slid down on [F] the second string to 12, you could hear the first string continuing to ring.
You don't [N] want that sound, so [E] kill that first string as well.
Stop [G] it at some point here.
[Ab] [Eb] I did it there with the ring finger [Eb] touching that string.
Not easy to do, [Dbm] [Bm] but you want to kill [F] it somehow, because if they ring over each [Eb] other,
you're going to get [Db] a dirty sound, and George has a very, very clean sound.
[Bb] OK, here's that phrase.
[Eb] [Bb] [Bm]
[B] Now phrase one reappears.
[E] Well, [C] the beginning of phrase one, this part.
[Eb]
That very first [Db] phrase, yeah, 18, 16, 14.
[Ab] And now we get this harmonised guitar [Eb] part.
There are two guitars playing on the original recording,
[Ab] and here we really need [Bb] to hear the sound of both guitars.
[Ab] We're going to play the [Eb] first and second strings like this.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Bb] [Eb] Now what I'm doing is I'm playing strings two and one [Ab] together,
which you can do either the way I am, [D] which is the pick playing the [A] second string,
[Eb] and the ring or middle [Bm] finger playing the first string,
[Ab] or just strum down with your [Db] pick.
[Eb] Down strokes with the pick will work fine too.
We're coming down.
Second [Db] and first strings at 18.
[N]
Slide down until you get to 15, pick again.
Slide down until you get to 12, [G] pick again.
[Ab] Slide down until you get to 9, [E] and pick again.
[Bb]
[Abm] At 9, you're going to immediately slide back up to 12 [Dbm] without picking again.
[Bb] [G]
There's the slide back to 12.
And then we [Ab] want those strings to be muted and quickly come [Eb] up to 15 and play two and one again.
[Bb] [Bb] That's quite a difficult move because that happens quite fast.
[Eb] [Bb]
There we are [G] at 15.
[Eb] Now, kill those two strings, bring the slide to the second string, 14th fret.
Pick 14 twice.
[B] [Ab] Pick it again and slide it [Dbm] to 12.
[G] [Abm] Stop that string, [Eb] move the slide to 9, pick [E] again and slide to 7.
This is all on the second string.
[D]
[B] [C] And that's the end of the track.
So coming from the harmonised part
[E]
[Bb] [Ab] [Abm]
[Bm] My sweet Lord
[Cm]
And we're into the song.
So hopefully that's enough to get you started with the introduction to My Sweet Lord.
[N]
Now, nobody really knows how [Eb] George played My Sweet [A] Lord.
When you [Eb]

[Eb] You have to jump the slide around too much.

[Eb]
All right, that's our first phrase.

you're going to get [Db] a dirty sound, and George has a very, very clean sound.
[Bb] OK, here's that phrase.
[Eb] [Bb] [Bm]

[E] Well, [C] the beginning of phrase one, this part.

[Bb] [G]

This is all on the second string.
[D]
[B] [C] And that's the end of the track.
So coming from the harmonised part
[E]
[Bb] [Ab] [Abm]
[Bm] My sweet Lord
[Cm]
And we're into the song.
So hopefully that's enough to get you started with the introduction to My Sweet Lord.
