[Eb] Hey [G] guys, welcome back to HD Piano.
I'm Phil.
Today I'm gonna be showing you how to play
Let Her Go by Passenger.
In this video, we're gonna be learning the intro, but at HDpiano.com,
we've also got videos for the verse, the chorus, and the whole song put together.
Let's get started!
Alright, the intro for Let Her Go sounds like this.
[C]
[D] [Em]
[D] [C]
[A] [E]
[C] And let's break that down.
Let's start
with the left hand first.
That's the easier part.
The left hand is gonna start on a C fifth,
[D] then we've got a D fifth, [E] and an E fifth.
Those are our three chords for this [C] section.
That C
fifth is a part of a C major chord, but we're just gonna play the open [E] fifth, which means we're gonna
take out the third, or the [C] E.
The D [D] chord, D major chord, but again, we're just gonna play that open
fifth.
And then the E [Em] is an E minor chord, and we're gonna play that open fifth as well.
[D] [C] [D]
So,
the right hand plays a little melodic figure.
We're gonna [Am] start with an A above middle C.
[Em]
[B] That's the basic idea here.
We're gonna decorate that melody a little bit more,
but we have a pentatonic idea here.
A B A G E.
[Ab] Okay, and the first phrase of this melodic
riff for the right hand goes like this.
[D]
[E]
One and two and three and A B [D] A G.
Okay,
so that's our pickup notes, and then the very first note of the beginning of the measure is
D E G.
Okay, so we'll go one [Gb] and two and three and A [D] B A G downbeat D E [Gm] G.
Okay, [B] three and.
[D]
[E] [B] Okay,
second phrase starts the same way, [D]
[E] [A]
[B] but instead we [E] end with a E B [A]
A.
Third phrase starts the
same way again, but we're gonna change it again.
[Gm] E G [Bm] D B.
We're gonna reach [E] up to that high D.
[G]
Okay, fourth phrase, finally we're deviating from that pattern.
We're just gonna play G A [Bb] B,
and hold it.
So all together, it goes first phrase, [D] [Em]
second [B] phrase, [D]
[Em] [A] third [B] phrase, [D]
[G] fourth.
[Bb]
Okay, we'll do that slower here in a second when we put the hands together.
[Gbm]
Left hand starting on
C, and again, right hand melodic figure starts with a couple pickup notes.
[G] Then on the [C] downbeat,
we're gonna play that left hand open fifth of C and G.
[A] [G] [C]
Good.
[B] Now, for the next phrase,
the second phrase, our pickup notes [G] are [D] gonna be accompanied by a new left hand chord,
and that's gonna be the D fifth.
So we'll play,
[Bm] then the left hand goes up to that E fifth when
the right hand completes the phrase.
[Em]
[Gb]
And again, [D] we're moving the left hand back down to D fifth
for [Em] the [D] A in the right hand melody.
Okay, so let's review that.
Just the first two phrases
for the right hand, but both hands together, starting with the C fifth and the left.
Ready?
[B] [G]
[C] C.
Now, pickup notes in the right hand.
[D] Left hand's gonna play that D.
Now, left hand [Em] moves
to E.
Left hand back [D] to D here.
Good.
[A]
[G] Third phrase.
Left hand goes back to C.
[C] [G]
Now, for the
fourth phrase,
[D] left hand goes up to that D [Bm] again, [E]
and then up to the E [B] after the right hand finishes
that final note.
Okay, so let's start from the third phrase.
We'll do third and fourth phrase.
[G] [C] This is the third [G] phrase.
Now, left hand up [D] to D fifth.
[E] Now, left hand to E fifth.
And that's
the end of the intro.
Let's put [B] all four phrases together now, and then we'll try it a little
faster.
Here we go.
One, two, three.
[G]
[C]
[A] [G]
[Em] [D]
[G] [C]
[G]
[D] [E]
Excellent work!
Now, if you need to do it at that slower
tempo, go ahead and pause, rewind, and play it back.
But when you're ready, meet me back here.
We're gonna try it one last time with the recording tempo a little faster.
And that
goes like this.
[A]
Three.
[C]
[G]
[Em] [D]
[C] [G] [D]
[Em]
And there you have it.
[Gb]
Whoo!
