Hey guys, today I'm going to be teaching how to play Don't Know by Mac Miller.
[Db] Pretty basic song, it's three chords, two piano parts essentially.
You could play them over each other, you could separate them, play them individually and
you know record it and loop it and all that stuff.
But we'll break it down right now.
First chord is that.
And again, he voices it differently, he probably voices something like that.
But I just octave with the left hand.
And this is a D minor.
So it goes, [A] [Bbm]
[Db] so D minor, and then you're keeping this same structure on the top two fingers.
And you're shifting this [A] hand down, right, to this A.
And then you're playing this A
augmented essentially on the top hand.
And [F] then you're going [Bbm] right to this B flat minor I think.
Right, so it's, [Db]
[Bbm] I mean the chords are harder to pronounce than they are to play.
It's just you're basically moving your thumb and this hand.
So it's [Db]
stay the same, [A] stay the [Bbm] same, stay the same.
So it's your [Ab] thumb going, [A]
[Bb] and it's your left hand [Db] going, [A] [Bb]
right?
So once you have that down, he adds an arpeggiation [D] with like a synthesizer I [Db] guess.
So I just got [Fm] this [N] thing pulled up.
That's a lot of echo.
[Db] Yeah, a little bit.
So he'll go like, and I won't play the left hand because it just adds a lot of noise.
But the right hand is essentially,
[Eb] right?
So it's [Db] the same [A] chords [Bbm] with [Eb] that arpeggiation, but the last time you're returning, [Db] you're
hitting this instead of that.
So it's [A] first chord, [Db]
second [Bbm] chord.
[Db] [Eb]
And if you want to play it with your left hand, the timing does become a little bit
strange because you'll see your left hand is going to arrive a little bit before your
thumb wants to arrive.
It wants to throw off your muscle memory of kind of how you [B] learned.
[Db]
So [Bbm] your left hand is hitting the bass note while your middle finger is hitting the return.
[Db] [Bbm]
[Db] [Bbm]
[Eb] And if that timing confuses you a little bit, I would just count it [Db] out, right?
1-2-3 [A]-4, 1-2-3-4.
I [Db] fucked up.
1-2 [A]-3-4, 1-2 [Bbm]-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3 [Db]-4, 1-2-3-4, 1 [Bbm]-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4.
[Eb] This [Gm] is kind of coming on the upbeat of three and four [Bb] whereas this would land on a four.
And then on the Spotify version he plays something a little, it's kind of similar.
I think he goes like, [Db] yeah he starts with that and then it's like, [A] [Bb]
well I think this is his root note the whole time.
So [Db] instead of doing that, right, he'll just, [A]
[Bbm] [Db]
[A] [Bbm] so that's just an F.
And then he'll do, in the song, you know, there's that little, [Eb] [Bbm] which is just that.
[Eb] So if you want [Db] to, you know, [A] [Bbm]
[Db] [A] [Bbm]
forget where it comes [Db] in.
[Bbm] [Ebm]
[Bbm] [Db] [A] [Bbm]
[Db] [A] [Bbm]
[Db] [A] [Bbm]
[Db] [Bb]
[Bbm] But [Db] yeah, I think you get the idea, right?
So it's just these three [A] chords [Bbm] bouncing back and [Db] forth.
[A] [Bbm]
[Db] [Bbm]
[Eb] [Db]
