Hey everybody, it's Julie.
Welcome to Mahalo.
I'm your guitar instructor and I'm going to teach you a classic today, Blowing in the
Wind by Bob Dylan.
It's a pretty easy song, so let's get started.
Our first chord for the intro is G major, which is three, two, open, open, open, and three.
And our strumming pattern is going to remain the same throughout the song and it's going
to be a down, down, down, up, down, up.
Kind of a country shuffle.
Now if you want, you can pick the bass note too.
So it would be pick, down, down, up, down, up.
And it's a little bit rapid fire.
I'll do the intro for you.
Four bars.
And then we're going to alternate between the G chord [C] and the C chord for the verse.
So C is on the A string.
Three, two, open, one, and open [Gm] like this.
[G]
G, [C] C, [G] G.
Again, G, [C] C, [G] G.
For the second line of this, same thing, [E] but we're going to also add in [Am] A minor, which
is open A, two, [Em] two, one, and open, and then D major [D] as well, which is on the D string,
open, then two, three, and two.
[Bm] So second line is going [G] to go G, [C]
C, [G] G, G, G, [Am] A minor, [D]
D.
[C#] So with vocals, it sounds something like [G] this.
How [C] many roads must [G] a man walk down, for you [C] call [G] him a man?
How many [C] seas must [G] a wife of sail, for she [Am] sleeps [D] in vain?
[B] For the third line, we go back to what we played in the first line, [G] which is G, [C] C, [G] G,
G, C, G, G, [C] C,
[G] G.
And then here we can also add a Gsus4, so we're going to keep that G shape there, but
take our first finger and place it on the first fret of the B to get that Gsus4.
[Em] So I'll go back, rewind, and I'm going to sing it too.
[G] How many [C] times must [G] a cannonball fly, for their [C] [G] forever band?
Gsus4.
Now we're into [G#] our, I guess we could call this chorus, but it's really more of a refrain.
So we [Am] need A minor, D, [D]
[Em] also E minor, which is open, two, two, and the rest are open,
[C] to C, and then C again, [D] D major, back [G] to G.
Like [Am] this.
The answer, my [D] friend, [Em] is blowing [C] in the wind.
The answer [D] is blowing in the [G] wind.
Also on this [Bm] last G of the refrain, you can add that sus4 back in.
So, one more [Am] time.
A minor, [D] D, [Em] E minor, [C]
C, C, [D] D,
[G] G, Gsus4, and then on G.
And then you repeat that for everything, you guys.
And that's how you play the whole song.
Really easy, really simple, really fun, timeless classic.
Thanks a lot for watching.
