Hey everyone, welcome back to Swift Guitar Lessons.
Today I'm putting together a quick
demonstration of Stand By Me played in the key of G.
This has been transposed to this
key just to [G] make it a little bit more beginner friendly, but it can easily be put back into
the original key of A by putting the capo up on the second fret.
Let's get started.
Okay so this song is very easy, just four chords.
We need a G, that's our I chord.
We
need [Em] an E minor, which is our VI.
[C] We need a C chord, which we can call IV, okay, four
notes away from the I.
[D] And then we need a D major, our V.
And this represents thousands
[Eb] of really popular songs.
Our strumming pattern, we're going to do strum, [G] chuck, strum, chuck.
Okay, and by the chuck I mean a little slap of the strings.
So we're going to do, strum,
slap, strum, slap, strum, slap, strum, [Em] slap, twice on the G chord, then the E minor, strum,
slap, strum, slap, strum, slap, strum, slap.
[C] Now we're going to cut that in half on the
D chord, so only one set of strum, slap, strum, slap.
Move it on [D] the D, [G] and back to
the G chord.
And that's the progression in its entirety.
Notice how it begins with G
and ends with G.
Okay, then looping back around, we're going to have to do another set of G
chords, so it's going to seem like you're on G for a long time, actually 16 beats.
So
let's give that a try.
Here [Em]
[C]
[D] [G]
we go.
G, to the G minor, [Em] to the [C] C chord, D [D] chord, back
to G.
[G]
Alright, so that's a very popular guitar rhythm, one that we call the R&B strumming
pattern.
Now that you've got your chords down, and your strumming pattern, we're ready to
play this song.
Let's get started.
Alright, here we go, nice and slow.
One, two, three.
When the night has come,
[Em] and the land is dark, and the wind is blowing, and the stars are
blue, [C] and the moon [D] is the only [G] light to see, no I won't be afraid, no [Em] I won't be afraid,
[C] just as long [D] as you stand, stand [G] by me.
Chorus.
So darling, darling, stand by me, oh now,
[Em] stand by me, [C] stand now, [D]
stand by [G] me, stand by me.
If the sky that we look upon [Em] should
tumble and fall, [C] and the mountains, [D] they should crumble [G] unto the sea, I won't cry, I won't
cry, no [Em] I won't shed a tear, just [C] as long [D] as you stand, stand [G] by me.
Chorus.
So darling,
darling, stand by me, oh [Em] now, now, stand by me, [C] stand now, [D]
stand by [G] me, stand by me.
If
the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall, and the mountains, they should crumble
unto the sea, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear, just as long as you stand, stand by
[Em]
[C] [D]
[G] me.
Chorus.
