How To Play Al Stewart Nostradamus (intro only) chords
Start Jamming...
The Nostradamus [Ab] is in Dadgad tuning.
Let's get in tune first of all.
Take your first string, tune [Dm] it down to D.
[A] Second string down to A.
Now strings [G] 3 and 4 stay the same.
So that third string should be G.
Fourth [D] string D.
And in fact [E] the fifth string too stays on [A] A.
But the sixth [D] comes down to D.
That's the sound of Dadgad.
And now Stuart starts with the introduction like this.
In the
All on [A] one chord.
You want [B] the third string at the 11th fret, fourth string at the 12th fret.
[C] And Al Stuart is typically [F] a very busy strummer and he certainly is here.
Here's a slowed down version of the bar that then repeats four [D] times.
[B] So it's down and the very first down we hear is [D] a spread out down.
And then down up, down up, down up, down up, down up, down up, down up.
I'm going to give you the rhythm but then we're going to talk about the accents where he stresses the down strum.
The rhythm is 1 and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a.
But the stresses are like this.
They're [Ab] on the 1, on the and of 2 [D] and the 4.
1 and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a.
[B] And he does it [D] four times.
1, 2, 3, 4.
In the
And that strum pattern and the chord continues through bars 3 and 4 as the verse begins.
Is the wind this
That was two [B] bars of it.
And then on blowing we change chord for the first time.
[A]
Bring the shape that [Am] you've got [F] down to fret 6 and 7 of the 3rd and 4th strings and add the first string [A] at the 7th fret.
Two bars of that chord in the same strum pattern.
Blowing the
[D] And notice that my thumb is touching the 6th string here.
I don't want the 6th string in that chord so I'm muting that [A] string.
Now we go to a G [N] chord in Dadgad Tuning which is the 5th string 2nd fret, 2nd string 2nd fret.
And again I'm muting the 6th string although it won't be too bad if you do get the 6th string here.
Two bars of that chord.
[Bm]
Blowing the
And [D] the home chord of D which is 3rd string 2nd fret, 4th string 4th fret.
[F] And at the end [D] of this bar on 4 e and a he lifts the 4th string off but it's not important if you don't.
Otherwise it's the same pattern.
Blowing the
With that finger coming off if you want to get it just like him.
And then put it back on for the second bar.
[G] So that's bars 9 and 10 with the finger coming off [B] on the 4th beat [D] of bar 9.
Blowing the
And now that sequence repeats.
You go back to bar 3 and repeat it.
Blowing the
[Gbm] [A]
[G]
[D]
And that [Dm] takes us to bar 11 where we get another [D] bar of the full D chord and [B] then a bar of the chord that actually is C9.
But he makes it just by making what would be a normal C chord in standard tuning.
So we're going to go bar of the normal D chord to a bar of a C shape.
[D]
Blowing the
[E] Notice that I emphasise spread out that first strum of the C shape because that's what he does.
And I'm muting the 6th string on that chord too.
And now [Ab] two bars [D] that go back to the normal D shape.
The 2 finger D shape.
Blowing the
We're now [Bm] at page 2 bar 15 where he plays [D] two bars of D with the 4th string finger [B] off.
So just the 3rd string 2nd fret [D] which is kind of a modal D chord neither major nor minor.
Experiment with moving between the sound hole and the bridge to get an interesting effect on this chord.
