Hi everyone, Michael Caswell here and we're going to be taking a look at T-Rex and Get It On.
Mark Bolan was a great songwriter in the 70s, sadly missed a car accident in 1976,
died in a mini, crashed into a tree, very sadly missed.
But I remember as a very young kid my brother and my sister buying all the T-Rex stuff.
So this has got kind of cool memories for me this tune, but it's such a big song.
It's been covered by a lot of bands.
So we're going to look at the actual original recording of it and I'm going to try and kind of take you through
what is going on on the original recording.
Obviously the main thing that you want to play is that opening riff, which [E] on the face of it seems very easy,
but to get it actually nailed is harder than you think.
So here's what it is and I'm going to take you through it.
Here we go.
One, two, three, four.
Okay, just a couple of notes there really.
You're just holding a low E power chord really.
Open E string and [B] the A string.
[A#m] Holding the A string and we're doing that kind [E] of E to E6 kind of movement,
which is your third finger taking care of the fourth fret on the A string.
And that's not so much the problem, it's what this hand does.
Now it's kind of, there's a couple of things going on to get that sound in terms of,
I've got quite a wiry kind of sound.
It's quite wiry because the actual original is quite wiry and it's kind of got some kind of reverb on there.
Old kind of old plate reverb from way back in the 70s.
Also I'm muting with my kind of palm.
I'm not kind of letting it kind of ring like this.
[C#] It's [A#] not that, it's kind of containing it.
You're kind of just resting, so the string, resting this part of your hand on the bottom two strings
just so it kind of can't kind of ring out too much.
[E]
[B] And you're getting the accents with this kind of [A] picking.
[E]
So you can hear that accent is going.
[B] [C#] [B] [C#]
[B] [C#] [E]
So it's a kind of a, pay special attention to that riff
because I've seen so many guitar players sort of play that and it's close,
but it's not the cigar, it's not kind of bang on.
[A#] One more time just because it's great to [E] play.
So that riff pretty much carries all the way through the intro and the verse.
It goes up to the, when he goes to the A chord, it does exactly the same thing in [A] A.
[E] [A]
[E]
[A]
[E] [A]
[E]
So just, I'm sure you know this, but just there's your [A] A chord.
Just holding the D string on the second fret and doing exactly the same movement on the D string.
