Fishing in the Dark was the number one hit for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and was written
by Wendy Waldman and Jim Fotoglow.
The song's in the key of D and will use drop D tuning on both the acoustic and the lead guitar.
There's nothing too fancy going on, so both guitar parts should be pretty straightforward to learn.
[D]
Lazy yellow moon coming up to me.
[G] Crickets are singing and the lightning bugs are floating on the breeze.
[D] Baby, do you know where we're going?
Fishing in the dark, lying on our backs and counting the stars [G] when the cool breeze is blowing.
[D] Down by the river and on the bony blue light, where we're falling in love in the middle
the night [G] just blew in slow.
[Em] Stayed the whole [A] night through,
[E] [Em] feels so [A] good to be [D] me.
QMT gone, she's a QMT gone,
she's in the dark, lying on her back saying,
count the stars [G] where the cool grass grows.
[D]
You can tell by the picture in the phone,
that [G] I knew it was the time to be right,
just to take you along.
[D] Baby get ready,
it don't matter if we sit forever,
fish don't bite.
[E] Alright, the first thing we need to do is get our guitar into drop D tuning.
So we're going to take this low E string
and we're going to tune it down to be one octave lower
than our open D string.
[D]
So when you get it close, you should be able to play an open D chord with all the strings
and have it sound like that.
So there's only really two sections we need to learn,
the intro and verse, and then the chorus.
So let's start with the intro and verse.
There's one main riff that we'll learn in a couple different places.
First is over the D chord.
So we're palm muting this, which is when the flesh of our right hand
The strum pattern, let's just learn it on this D chord.
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down.
So to give it that authentic feel, the first downstroke needs to be just these low strings,
and then the second downstroke needs to be all of them.
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down.
So let's go through a chorus nice and slow.
We are going to start on this D chord.
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down.
And we're going to move up to the G chord, [G] where the cool grass grows.
Then back to the D.
[D]
We'll be falling in love.
Here's the verse.
One, two, three, go.
[G]
Alright, to start, let's get our guitar into drop D [E] tuning.
To do that, we're going to take this low E string,
and we're going to make [D] it sound one octave below our open [E] D string.
[D]
That's pretty close.
When you get it right,
you should be able to strum all your strings on a standard D chord,
and have it sound like that.
Alright, so lead into every verse during the introductions,
there's two licks that we do on the lead guitar.
The first one is
And then we go [E] back down.
[D] So let's look at those nice and slow.
The first one, we're going to start with the open D string,
then go [E] up to the second fret with the middle finger,
[G] give it a good solid bend.
So, so far, we're [D] playing the open D chord,
then we're moving and we're playing the [G] G chord,
and then we're going to do this lick.
[A] [D]
So we've just [A] got two picks on the open A string,
[D] hammer on to second fret, open D string.
We're going to let that ring,
then right before we go back to the D chord,
we're going to do the second lick we learned in the intro.
And then back to the second D chord in the chorus,
we're going to just let it ring again.
One, two, three, go.
We'll skip ahead, we'll play in between the two sections of verse one.
One, two, three.
[A] Now we'll build in on the A.
[D] Chorus.
