Amie - Guitar Lesson and Tutorial - Pure Prairie League chords
Start Jamming...
Amy is a hit for the band Pure Prairie League and it was written by Craig Fuller.
I'm fired up to do a lesson on this song, it's one of my favorite songs of all time.
The only thing that makes it a little more difficult to do a lesson on is that there's a lot of guitar tracks on that original recording,
so we've narrowed it down to just three guitar parts.
We've got the bassline acoustic part that ends with a really nice Travis picking part,
and then we've got, of course, the acoustic lead work for the intro and the solo,
and then there's a subtle but important electric rhythm part that we're going to learn.
[A]
[G]
[D] [A] [G] [D] [A]
[G] [D] [A] [G]
[D] [A] [G] [D] [A]
[E] You're ecstatic, you know you're good, you know that you're not,
[A] you need [G] what you [D] want,
[A] I think [G] I can [D] save you,
wow, [Bm] maybe longer than [E] my youth.
[A]
[D] [E] [F#m] [A]
[F]
[F#m] [C#] [F#m]
[B] [F#m] [F#] [Em] [A]
[B] [C#m] [Em] [A] [B]
[A] [C] [D#] [A] [G]
[B] [A] I'm bleeding out, [Em] I'm [B] [A] bleeding [Em] out,
[A] I don't know what I'm gonna do.
In this tutorial we're going to learn the pre-intro, I guess you'd call it,
then we'll learn the intros, verses, and choruses.
We're going to learn the outro, or the falling in and out of love with you section, in its own separate tutorial.
So to start, we're going to do this.
In the acoustic guitar, the lead acoustic, which again, we'll learn in a different tutorial,
is doing the [B] over [A] that.
So, we've got pointer finger, 7th fret of D, [E] ring finger,
on the [A] 9th fret of G, pinky finger, 10th fret of B,
and the pinky's also going to mute this high E string.
Also, we're going to have our middle finger come across the top of all these strings,
at least this is comfortable for me, and mute this E and this A string,
so that if we break all the strings, which we won't do, but in case we nick them,
all you hear ringing out is D, G, and B.
On the first downstroke, we aim at the D string.
If you nick this G string, it's no big deal.
[E] And then the next downstroke, we're going to aim at the G and the B string.
Alright, this outro section, falling in and out of love with you,
is really a wonderful piece of writing, in my opinion,
and it's got a lot of different guitar tracks going on on that original recording.
So, I've done my best to kind of consolidate it down into one part
that kind of keeps the authentic feel of that section alive.
So, here's what I came up with.
We're going to switch to Travis picking here.
So, we were using our pick.
We're just going to give it one final strum,
and then if you're doing this in a live situation, you can just wrap your pick.
And then, you'll be ready to do this.
[A]
[B] One, two, three, [A] go.
[G] [D] [A]
[G] [D] [D#] And the verse.
One, two, three, go.
[A]
[G] [D] [A] [G]
[C#] Alright, in this tutorial, we're going to learn two really fun acoustic lead parts.
We're going to start with the [F#m] introduction, which sounds like this.
[B] [E]
[A] [B] [F#m]
[A] [E] Then, you're into the regular introduction right before the verse.
So, we're going to start here on the second fret of D.
Let's learn just this much first.
[A] [B]
[F#m] [A]
So, first of all, it's swung.
So, without getting too complicated, a straight [F#m] feel would be
[A]
It's not that.
That doesn't feel right, right?
It's this.
[E]
[A] So, it's just kind of bouncy, swung feel.
We're on the second fret of D.
We're going to hammer on to the [E] fourth fret.
[F#] Then, two picks on the second [A] fret of G.
Pick the fourth fret of G, pull [B] off.
It [F#] sounds good, right?
So, we're going to learn it as close as we can, a note for note.
We're going to start with this first section.
[F#m] [E]
[F#m] [B] [A]
[Dm] Alright, so we're here on the third fret of the D string.
We're going to slide up to four.
[F#] Then, two picks on [A] the second fret of G.
Then, back and forth a couple [F#m] times.
[A]
[A#] [E] Alright, in this tutorial, we're going to learn this electric rhythm part,
which is subtle, but it's very important.
If you're playing in a full band situation, and you're the only lead guitar player,
you might choose to either play this and the acoustic lead all on the acoustic,
or you might choose to play everything, including the acoustic lead, on the electric,
just so you don't have to be switching guitars all the time,
which wouldn't make sense in a performance situation.
So, either way works.
But we're going to play it like you hear it on the record,
with this electric guitar doing what we're doing over the verses and choruses.
So, the first verse part looks like this.
[A]
[F#] [Gm] [Bm] [A] [G]
[A] [G] [A]
[N] Let's learn just that much.
So, we're hybrid picking here.
We've got pick on the G string.
We're going to be clucking this B string with our second finger on our right hand.
And we're hammering on from 9 to 10.
In a solo.
[F] 1, 2, 3, [F#m] go.
[E] [F#m] [Em] [A] [C] [F#] [E] [A] [C#m]
[Em] [F] [B]
[A] [C] [D#] [A] [G]
[D] [Bm]
[E] [A]
[G] [D] [A] [G]
[D] [F#m] [G] [D] [A]
[G] [D] [A] [G] [D]
