Welcome back for my classic rock song today.
I'm going to teach you guys how to play Donovan's Atlantis
This I love this song.
This is one of my favorite classic rock songs and it always reminds me of the movie Goodfellas
Alright starting off.
It's just [Ab] a very very simple chord progression over [G] and over and over and over again
All right, which is [C] C D
[D]
[Cm] [F]
C
[C]
then [G] G
All right, [N]
so
There's two let's divide this song up into two parts
It starts off when Donovan is actually talking and telling you about the other tale of Atlantis
And it's very slow and all it is is basically
Down-strums and I'll play through it once you can see [C] it.
[G]
[D]
[G] [F]
[G] [C] [G]
[C]
All [D] right
That's the first [N] half of the song basically he plays that over and over again and all I'm doing is I'm down-strumming
Okay, and so when I play C the first chord in that chord progression
[C] The first time I strum it I'm going to strum it a little bit slower.
Okay.
I want to make all those notes ring
[G]
[D] All right, [G] and you see how right before I went to that D.
[D] I
[N] Strummed the strings once with my fingers off the strings.
So watch it in closely.
This is the the first part of the corporation
[C]
all
[G] [D]
[G]
[F]
[G] [C]
[G]
[C]
[N] right, so
Basically when you first when you switch to a new chord in that chord progression the first [C] time you strum it from a slow
It [G] gives it kind of a cool feel and that's how Donovan [N] plays this song and then also before you come to your next
Chord in the chord progression you want to do one strum with all your fingers off the strings.
[C] Okay?
[G] There it is.
Now go to D
[D] All
[G] the fingers are off now.
I go to [F] F
[G] All
Right, you get the idea
So that's the first half the song then when it gets hard and goes into I guess the chorus of the song where?
[Fm] The background vocals come in all [A] that's going on is just basically [G] up and down strumming and you're just strumming kind of freely
I guess [N] there's no exact strumming pattern to this.
This is this is basically what I do when I play this part
So I [C] go
[G] [D]
[G] [F]
[C]
[G]
over and over and [Fm] over again, [C] so
[D]
[G] [F]
[C]
[G]
[C]
All right
That's the rest of the song super easy song [N] one more part
If you want to get really kind of cocky when you're playing it
You can play the little fill solo that [G] that Donovan plays in it.
Okay, and it sounds like this.
You'll probably you'll probably recognize [C] it
[Gm]
[D] [A]
[Em] [F]
[Eb] [Fm] [Eb]
[Fm] [Gm]
[G] [F] [G]
All right, so I'll play it really slow
[N] I just kind of listened to the song of my ear and came up with it on my guitar so
[Cm] Basically you're down [G] and what you're doing is you're playing a solo over the chord progression
So you're actually starting off in the C note and [F] what's the first chord in [A] the chord progression at C?
Okay, [C] so
All [F]
[G] [Bb]
[C] [F] [G]
[Gm] right, so I'll do it [N] again and I'll do it again slow
I want you to really listen and try to pick it up by ear and figure out what I'm doing by ear
Well while also watching the video.
Okay, this is how you learn by ear
[C]
All [G]
[Gm] [C] [F]
[G] [Gm] [D]
[G] [C]
[D] [G] [Am]
[F]
[Eb] [Fm] [Eb]
[Fm] [C]
[F] [Gm] [G]
[F] [G]
right, not bad.
So remember
You're playing right here
[N] that's where you start and you're basically playing in the key of C and
Then you move up and you're going to D and that's the second chord in the chord progression
So when you're playing around this D [Eb] shape, you're actually playing over the D chord in the chord progression
[G] next
after that D you have an F which is the
[F] [Eb]
Back [F] [Eb] to C
[Cm] [F] [Gm]
G
[F] [G]
All right, so a little bit of theory I'll throw at you [N] if you have any questions, please let me know
