[N] We're going to take a look at a really, really fun song to play.
This is of course, Longinus and Messina, Your Mama Don't Dance,
a song I've been teasing you with for years and just never got around to a lesson.
Here it is.
Some of it was I just couldn't decide exactly how I wanted to teach it.
I've shown this to people lots of different ways at a lot of different levels.
Sometimes we'll just play it as a straight 12 [C]-bar blues.
[F] [C]
[F] [Em] [Fm]
Sometimes we'll finger [C] pick the intro like Jimmy did.
[D] Sometimes I'll [C] play it with a [Eb] pick.
[C]
[Ab] [C] A [Eb] little electro [Am] rhythm.
[G] Sometimes we'll play it with a [C] shuffle feel.
[Bb] Sometimes we'll play it with a swing [C] feel.
[A]
[C] Sometimes we'll play it with kind of a boogie feel.
[E] [Am]
And hopefully I'm going to [N] remember to talk about all of that in the lesson.
We'll also talk about playing some [Gm] leads.
[Dm] [C] [Ab]

[Em] [C] [E] [F]
[C] [G] And the bass part.

[Am] [Eb]
[Em] Maybe we'll take a look at the lick at the end.
[Cm] [Em] Not sure.
I [Db] have no idea what I'm really going to [Bb] do in this lesson.
But those are some of the things I've been thinking [N] about.
And if all goes well, I'll get to all of them.
I was blown away by this album when it came out.
It was
This is one I didn't have very many records yet.
Well, I don't know.
I probably had 50.
But this was 1972.
I believe we could consult because that was the year they had to start putting copyright
dates on albums.
And it should [B] say, copyright 1972.
Right there it does.
CBS.
In very small print.
Anyway, great album.
Included Angry Eyes, [Db] [A]
[N] Long Tail Cat.
Might have to get to that one.
Somewhere down the line too.
Whiskey, Good Friend.
Great tunes.
Anyway.
Okay, enough rambling about this.
There are
Now, as time went on, Loggins still plays this, but he doesn't play it in C anymore.
He plays it in A.
It makes it a little easier to sing.
And he doesn't usually get the whole riff in there.
The riff is more of a Jimmy Messina kind of thing.
So check out Loggins' version of playing it.
Oh, was it the Grand Canyon someplace?
[A] [D] [A]
Just 12 bar blues in A.
[D]
[A]
[E]
[Dm] [A]
[E] [D]
[E] Anyway, [N] so there is the simple version.
The simple campfire version.
I probably don't need to talk about that one anymore.
But we'll look at all, hopefully all, or a lot of the cool stuff that you can do in this lesson.
The first thing we're going to talk about, the first thing we're going to talk about,
I can say that slower so you can understand what I'm saying, is just 12 bar blues.
And we'll talk about the blues scale [C] a little [Bb] bit.
[F]
[E]
[Am] Doesn't have all those notes in it, but it has a lot of notes in it.
[G] [C] And [N] playing it descending in triplets at the end.
Okay.
I think I have talked about this enough.
Let's get on with the lesson on Your Mama Don't Dance.
That was the first segment on a lesson I put together, obviously, on Your Mama Don't Dance,
which is just a really fun song to play.
And as the lesson went on, it got totally out of control.
Talked [C] about simple 12 bar blues.
[F] [C] Talked about making it swingier using [A] ninth chords.
Talked about [Dbm] making it more [C] shuffley.
[F] [Dm]
[Bb] Talked about playing it in a more boogie [C] style, [A]
[F] [Am] [G] playing bass parts.
And talked about playing leads.
[F] [Ab]
[Am] [E] [Eb]
[F] So a lot of stuff got worked into [D] the lesson, even really including talking about playing
a solo [C] version,
[Bb] [Cm] [C]
[Gm] [Dm] [A]
[Ab]
[C] [F] [G] [Gb] [G]
[B] [Bb] [A] [C]
[Fm] [C] [N]
and kind of working that in too, where we're just kind of keeping the
rhythm going and the lead going at the same time.
So if you'd like to take a look at the lesson on Your Mama Don't Dance, it's up now.
It's part of the Target program, our monthly subscription program at Totally Guitars.
Also available as an independent lesson.
And there's so much information in this lesson.
It is a bargain.
But we also have a lot of free lessons to get you started.
There are over 60 of them that are much less complicated than this, but good ideas.
And we'll give you an idea of the kinds of things we go into at Totally Guitars.
So if you'd like to check out this lesson or anything else we have, come see us at Totally Guitars.
