Howdy!
[A] I always wanted to do that.
[Ab] Anyway, this is Mojo from 3chordguitar.com, [Db] being my usual goof.
[B]
The object of today's video is a requested song by Garth Brooks called Thunder Rolls.
And it's not an easy song for me to either play or sing, so I hope this is going to go relatively well.
I didn't plan on doing this one, but as I said, it was requested, so I figured, well, maybe I should.
So here [Dbm] we are.
The chords [B] we're going to be using today are going to be E minor, [Em] which is the [A] same thing as [E] a regular E,
except that you lift [B] the index finger [Em] off.
[Bbm] A [C] C and [A] [D]
[Em]
[G] a G.
[B] And that's it.
If other chords were to pop up, I would let you know as we go along.
Alright.
[Em] Three thirty in the morning.
That's your E minor.
[C]
Not a cold inside.
Not a soul inside, even.
That's a C chord.
[D] City's looking like a ghost town.
Not a moon, it's a midnight.
[Em]
We went [D] from a D [Em] back to the original E minor.
Rain drops on a windshield.
[C] There's a storm moving in.
[A] [Bb] One thing I like to do when I'm [C] in a C.
Often times I'll drop the pinky on the third fret of the high E string.
Regular C with the pinky in.
[Ab] When you're doing a little rhythm work, it [C] sounds nice.
[Em]
[B] Not too sure that it does, really, but I like it.
So there [Eb] you have it.
And by the way, it's pretty handy if you're doing the fingerpicking [Em] thing as well.
There's my pinky.
[G] Later on I'll show the fingerpick [Gb] version of that.
[C] [D]
[Em] [Ab] Alright.
Then we get to the part where the thunder actually rolls.
[C] Thunder rolls in a C here.
D.
[D]
And the [Em] lightning strikes.
When it strikes, you strike a E minor chord.
And then you're going to do an E minor, G, E minor pretty fast.
Slowly it goes like this.
[G]
[Em] So, down, up, down, [G] up, down.
[Em]
All that between the E [G] minor and the G chord.
[Em]
[C] Thunder rolls.
[D]
And the [Em] lightning strikes.
Now the love [D] grows cold.
Cold is a G.
I'll probably do a D.
On a [Em] moonless night.
Do the E minor, G thing again.
Storm [C] goes on.
C.
[D] D.
Out [Em] of control.
E minor, G, E minor.
Deep in [D] her heart.
G.
We'll write D.
Thunder rolls.
[B] [Em] And you're back to E minor.
So, if you [Bbm] want to fingerpick it, here's a closer [G] look at what my right [Bm] hand is doing.
[Em] [Db] So, thumb hits the bass note.
In this case, because it's an E minor chord, we're [G] going to be on the high, or the [B] thick E string.
And then it's going to [Em] be Johnny Cash on the fifth, index on the fourth string.
And then with the Johnny Cash again, I will pluck the high E.
So, thumb, Johnny Cash, index, Johnny Cash.
[Ab] And basically this pattern is repeated throughout the whole [B] song.
[Gb] You can do it from the start.
What I usually do when I play this [Bm] song is I do the verses [Bb] with the fingerpick.
And then when the thunder [Em] rolls for real, [D] [Bm]
[Db] I just go with the actual strumming because, well, [Gm] there's some thunder [Bm] going on, people.
All right.
[Em]
Three o'clock in the morning.
[C] Not a soul in sight.
[D]
City's looking like a ghost town on a moonless summer [Em] night.
Rain drops on the windshield.
[C] There's a storm moving on.
[G] [D]
[Em]
[Gb] You may have noticed, by the way, now I'm in the E minor.
Usually I'll hit the [E] bass here with the E.
[Em] And then I come back.
[G] Because I'm still [B] in E minor, I'll go to the A string this time with the thumb.
So, [E] in other words, I'm doing this.
[Em]
[Ab] Wish I'd come up with that, but [Db] Merle Travis did.
It's still a pretty handy little thing to do.
Also, if you like Orlando, [E]
[B]
[E]
[Ab] obviously what Chet Atkins used to do.
All right.
[C] [D]
[Bm] This is it.
[B] This is all there is [A] to that song.
Not much, really.
Just those chords.
If you have any questions, email me, mojo [B] at 3chordguitar.com.
Hope this helps.
Take care, guys.
Bye.
