The [Dbm] world is a [Bb] vampire.
Despite all their [Ab] rage, they're still just a rat in a cage.
Welcome [Gb] to WatchMojo.com and today we're taking a look at the history of the [Eb] Smashing Pumpkins.
[Ab] Called you out [Bb] to play.
[Eb] The Smashing Pumpkins formed [Ab] in 1988 [Bb] in Chicago, Illinois.
[G] Consisting of founder [Gb] and vocalist Billy Corgan, [A] guitarist James Eha, bassist Darcy Retsky
and drummer Jimmy [Db] Chamberlin, the band started performing together and released two successful
[Gb] singles in the early 1990s.

[A] After signing a deal with [B] Caroline Records, the Smashing Pumpkins recorded their debut
with [Gb] $20,000, which was [B] a relatively [E] hefty budget for an indie [Em] band.
Released in 1991, Gish was [E] a labor of love for Corgan, who fine-tuned each individual
aspect and played most of the guitar and bass pieces.
[Em] [E]
However, this process took a massive [F] toll on [E] the band dynamic.
Though [A] this alternative rock album [E] barely cracked the charts, the Pumpkins did find
[Em] moderate success with the single [D] Rhinoceros.
[C] [G] [D]
The next few months were eventful ones.
[Ab] As the band toured and signed with [D] Virgin Records, they dealt with multiple personal
problems, including Corgan's depression, [G] Chamberlin's drug and alcohol dependencies
[D] and the breakup of Eha's and Darcy's relationship.
[G] [E]
With their [Ab] sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, [G] the Smashing [E] Pumpkins finally [A] had their first
taste of mainstream success.
[Ab] The 1993 [F] album [D] debuted at number [Ab] 10 on the Billboard [Em] 200 and sold an [Ab] impressive 4 million
copies in [Em] America.
Like their [E] previous record, Siamese Dream caused tension within the band because Corgan
played many of the instruments.
Notable singles [F] included Disarm and [Bb] Today.

Thanks [Eb] to a burst of creativity, Corgan [Bb] wrote [C] dozens of songs in the following months.
[F] [Ab]
[C] This resulted in the [Gm] 1995 double-disc set [G] Melancholy and the Infinite [Eb] Sadness, which
topped the Billboard 200 [Ab] in its first week.

[G] The positively reviewed [Eb] effort was eventually [Ab] certified nine [D] times platinum.
[Ab] Of its 28 tracks, five were released [F] as singles, including the Grammy-winning [B] Bullet with Butterfly
[Db] Wings, the Top 20 hit [Bm] 1979 and the [Db] popular Tonight [B] Tonight.

[Ebm] [Gb] But tragedy [Bm] struck while on tour in [Db] 1996.
Touring keyboardist Jonathan [B] Melvoin and [Db] Chamberlin both suffered heroin [B] overdoses that resulted
in [Db] Melvoin's death as well as Chamberlin's [A] arrest and [Gb] dismissal from the band.
[E] The group kept [B] going and found themselves producing more electronic [F]-sounding music for
assorted movie soundtracks.
[Ab]
[G] The Pumpkins [F] continued exploring electronic influences on [Ab] 1998's Adore, which found a
spot at number [F] two [Ab] on Billboard.

[Bm] [F] [Ab] [F]
[Ab] Despite a [E] Grammy nomination and [Db] strong critical [C] reviews, the album [E] was a [F] commercial failure.
Lineup changes plagued the band near decades end, while Chamberlin reunited [Ebm] with the band,
and Retsky quit and was [F] temporarily replaced by ex-Hole bassist Melissa Oftermar.

Meanwhile the Pumpkins dropped Machina, The Machines of God, in [A] 2000.
While it was billed as a return to their rock roots, the album [Bb] failed to find [G] the same success
as [A] their previous work and fell into obscurity [Bb] after its top three Billboard [Db] debut.
[Gb]
[Bbm]
Also in 2000, Corgan announced the [Ab] Smashing Pumpkins' imminent demise [Gb] by year's end.
Their [E] last recording, Machina II, The Friends and Enemies of Modern [Gb] Music, was released
online that September [Bbm] for free.
Members then [A] concentrated on other projects, including the [Ab] supergroup Zwan and the Jimmy [Gb] Chamberlin complex.
A Smashing Pumpkins [Bb] compilation entitled Rotten [Db] Apples and Corgan's [Abm] first solo disc were also issued.
[Eb]
Following two years of reunion talk, [Gbm] Corgan and [Ab] Chamberlin performed [Bbm] under the Smashing
Pumpkins banner with [C] three new touring members in [Ab] 2007.
The [Eb] album Zeitgeist appeared that same year and was met with mixed emotions from critics
and [Ebm] fans alike.

In 2009, Chamberlin left the band several months before the launch of the musical project
Tear Garden by [F] Kaleidoscope.
That concept album was initiated as an ongoing project, [D] where tracks were released online
individually at no cost as soon as they were finished.
[Am] 2012's Oceania was part of this undertaking, but instead of being free MP3s, it marked
the [F] Pumpkins' return to [Db] physical [D] albums.
It's [A] amazing how many people from my [B] generation [Ab] have totally sold out and just cashed in and
just go and play their old [G] songs and they [A] have no ambition, no [B] future.
They don't call [C] you an old band anymore, they call you [B] a heritage act.
[A]
That's the last [Em] thing we're going to be.
[C] Despite their fame and instability, the Smashing [Ab] Pumpkins have recorded [A] numerous albums, embarked
on several successful [Em] tours, and sold [C] millions of records.
All this is a testament [G] to the fact that it's not really the band that matters, but the music.
