I had written him a letter, which I had, for want of better knowledge,
sent to where I'd met him down the Lachlan years ago.
He was shearing when I knew him, so I sent the letter to him just on spec,
addressed as follows, Clancy of the Overflow.
And an answer came directed in a writing unexpected,
and I think the same was written with a thumbnail dipped in tar,
t'was his shearing mate who wrote it, and verbatim I will quote it,
Clancy's gone to Queensland drovin', and we don't know where he are.
In my wild erratic fancy, visions come to me of Clancy
gone a-droving down the Cooper where the western drovers go.
With the cattle slowly stringing, [N] Clancy rides behind them singing,
for the drovers' life has pleasures that the townsfolk never know,
and the bush has [C] friends to greet him, and their kindly voices [A] meet him
in the murmur of the gum trees and [Em] the river on its bars,
and he [F#] sees the [G] visions splendid [N] of the sunlit plains extended,
and at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting [G#]
stars.
I am sitting in my dingy little office, where a stingy ray of sunlight
struggles feebly down between the houses tall,
and the fettered air and gritty of the dusty, dirty city
through the open window floating spreads its foulness over all,
and in place of lowing cattle I can hear the fiendish rattle
of the tramways and the buses making hurry down the street,
and the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting
comes [F#] fitfully and faintly through the ceaseless tramp [D#m] of feet,
and the hurrying people daunt me, and their pallid faces haunt me
as they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous haste,
with their eager eyes and greedy, and their stunted forms and weedy,
for the town's folk have no time to grow, [C] they have no time [G] to waste,
and [N] I somehow rather fancy that I'd like to change with Clancy,
[C] like to take a turn at droving where the seasons [F#] come and go,
[G] while he faced the [F#] round eternal of the cash book and the journal,
[C] but I doubt [D] he'd suit the office, Clancy of the overflow.

[A] [A] There's a trade [Am] you all know well, [G] it's bringing the cattle [A] over,
now listen while [C] I tell to you [D] how I became [A] a drover,
[E] I wanted stock [G] from Queensland [C] to Kempsey I did wander,
[A] bought a thousand [C] cattle there [Em] and then turned [Am] overlander,
[C] pass the bottle [G] round boys, [D] don't you leave it [G] stand there,
[Am] for tonight we'll drink the health [Em] of every [A]
overlander.
[Em] [C] [A]
When the cattle [C] were counted and [G] the outfit ready to [A] start,
I saw the boys all gathered there with [D] their swags thrown in [Am] the cart,
all kinds of men I [G] had, two [Am] from France, Spain and Blanders,
loyal as doctors, good and bad, in the mob of [A] overlanders,
[C] pass the bottle [G] round boys, don't you leave it stand there,
[A] for tonight [C] we'll drink the health of every [Am] overlander.
And from the [C] track I then spread out [G] where the grass was [Am] green and young,
when a squatter [C] with a cursed [G] shout told me to [E] move along,
I said come [G] join my old [C] band and don't you [G] raise me dander,
[A] for I'm a [C] regular now and card of Queensland [A] overlander.
[Am] Pass the [C] bottle round boys, don't you [G] leave it stand [A] there,
for [C] tonight we'll drink the health of every [A]
overlander.
[C] [Am]
It's true we [C] pay no [D] license, our run is [Am] rather large,
it's not often [C] they can catch us [D] so they cannot [A] make a charge,
[C] they say we [G] live on staw [C] beef, but no I'm [G] not a gander,
[A] if a good fat [E] straggler joins the [C] mob he does the [A] overlander.
[C] Pass the [G] bottle round [C] boys, and let's not [G] leave it stand [Am] there,
for tonight we'll drink the [G] health of every [A] overlander.
And if [C] our horses get [G] knocked up and forced we [E] turn them free,
[A]
and then a [C] cove won't walk [G] in on us when he [E] can see,
[C]
stray workers [G] too we bone, [C] I say it [G] is no [A] slander,
they say there's [C] many a clever to ripple by an [A]
overlander.
[C] Pass [G] the bottle round [C] boys, don't you [G] leave it stand [Am] there,
for [C] tonight we'll drink the health of [A] every [C] overlander.
[Am]
I [C] was going to bring a shirt all me [Am] mates can say,
but if we [C] pass a [G] township upon a [A] washing day,
[C] the dirty [G] brats and kids with shelter quickly raise me dander,
[A] crying, mother dear, taking your clothes, here comes the overlander.
[C] So pass the [G] bottle round [C] boys, and don't you [G] leave it stand [A] there,
for [C] tonight we'll drink the health of every [A] overlander.
In town we [C] dress ourselves up [D] and we go and [Am] see a play,
we never think of being hard [D] up or how to [Am] spend the night,
we [G] stare up to them pretty [C] girls that dress [G] themselves in grandeur,
[Am] and while they sweat [C] our checks they swear they love the [A]
overlander.
[C] Pass the bottle [G] round boys, don't you leave it stand [A] there,
for [C] tonight we'll drink the health of every [A]
[Am] overlander.
Pass the bottle [C] round boys, don't you leave [G] it stand there,
[A] for tonight [C] we'll drink the health of every [A] overlander.
