right, welcome to the lesson.
We're going to take a look at Tennessee Waltz today.
It's
a great song in the key of D and it's a good beginner song so it's definitely one I'll
play very simply the first time through.
Get you a really good version to play with a couple
of different endings and then I'll also come back and we'll add some double stops and some
extra sort of third position things that'll make it very interesting.
So let's get started.
All right, here's the first phrase.
[E]
[D]
[G]
Okay, so let's break that down.
What we have, we
start on the open D string.
We go open 1, 2, 4.
Now if you can do your 4 great.
If not,
you can definitely use open D there or open A there.
[F#]
[Dm] [F#m] Okay,
[G#] and you feel the syncopation
to that lick.
Alternatively, if you're not ready to use that [D] 4, you can go.
Okay, so
you end up right there.
We start down on a third finger on the A string next.
[F#]
[G] Okay,
so there's a couple [N] of things going on here.
We got a slide on that first finger up to
a F sharp note and then you also have some slurs going on.
So let's look at some of the
extra notes, some of the extra double stops and you know, maybe some third position things.
Some extra trills that we can put in this song to really spice it up the second time
through.
This is a great song to do double stops on.
Any song in the key of D will work
really well for double stops because you can drone on your D string, you can drone on your
A string and depending on what key you're playing over, you can also drone over your
G string.
So let's look at this.
So the first part, what I'm going to do is let's play the
[D] melody.
Okay, but at the same time, let's drone on the A string.
[F#m] [F#] [G]
Okay, so this is one
of these, we're going to get into these techniques that are going to require more experience.
So if you're a beginner level, this is something to reach for but you're probably not going
to be able to do it right off the bat and that's okay.
[D]
[G]
Okay, so what we're doing there
[D]
is open A, so we drone that A over the first finger.
[Bm] Okay, [G#] back to droning on [D] the D.
[G] Okay,
that together sounds like [D] this.
[Bm]
[D]
[A]
Okay, so that whole second lick right there, you just [D] play
double stops on your open A and D and wherever your fingers go, [G] you're playing the opposite
[A] double [D] stops.
So if you're playing [A] a melody line on the A [G] string, you're droning on your
[Bm] D string.
If you're playing the melody line on the D string, you're droning on the A string.
