Joan Baez [Eb] is a remarkable woman, not only for her musical [N] talents, but I think for
her commitment as a human being to better the lives of people around the world.
[E] [F] This song that she said that I could use on my album before she used it on hers, thanks,
she says, I've got [Cm] this one song, I haven't [C] decided what to do with it, I really don't
know what to do with it, she plays [F] Stones in the Roads, I write this little note, it
says, give it to me, and I stick it under [C] her face, and she says, okay, and people don't
usually do that nowadays, it's usually a big [C] copyright thing, and this [F] and the that, and
the management, and she just [G] gave me the song.
[F] [Bb]
When we were young we [C] pledged allegiance, [F] every [Cm] morning of our [F]
lives, the classroom
rang [G] with children's [F] voices, under teachers' [Bb] watchful eyes.
I do think that [E] there is a responsibility that goes along with being an artist, to be
able to [G] speak out [Bb] about things that I believe in, as [F] opposed to being silent.
We cleaned our [Bb] plates with guilty minds, [Gm]
stones [F] in the road, shone like diamonds in the dust,
[Cm] and then a [Gm] voice called to us to make our [F] way back home.
When I was ten [Eb] my father held me on his shoulders [Cm] above the [Bb] crowd, to [F] see a [Bb] train draped in
mourning [F] pass [Bb] slowly through our town.
His [F] widow [Eb] kneeled with all their children at the [Cm] sacred burial [Bb] ground, and the TV [Eb] glowed
that long hot [F] summer with all the [Bb] cities burned down.
[Eb] And the [F] stones in the [Bb] road that flew out beneath [F] our bicycle [C] tires, worlds removed [Gm] from all
false [Eb] fires [Bb] as we [F] raced each other [Bb] home.
[F] [Eb] [F]
[C] [Bb] When I was [F] writing Stones in the Road I was writing it as a [F] reminder to myself that [Bb] we
grew up in the 60s with certain role models, people like [Eb] Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther
King, who could inspire us, and [Cm] even though they're gone, [Bb] what they stood for should not
be, and we should instill it in [F] our children and remember it for ourselves.
[Bb] And [Eb] now we drink our coffee all around, [F] we climb that ladder [Bb] run by run, [Eb] we are the [Bb] daughters
and the sons, [Gm] but [Eb] here's the [F] line that's missing.
[Bb] The [F] starving [Gm] children have been replaced by souls out [Cm] on the [F] street.
We give a dollar [Gm] when we pass [F] and hope our [Bb] eyes don't miss.
We pencil [Eb] in, we cancel [F] out, we crave the [Cm] corner sweet.
[Bb] We kiss your ass, [Eb] we make you whole, [F] we doctor the [Bb] receipt.
[Eb] And the [F] stones in the road [Bb] fly out from [F] beneath our [Cm] wheels, another [Gm] day, another day, [Eb] before
we get [F] back
[C] [Eb] home.
[F] Stones in the road [Bb] leave a mark [F] whence they [C] came, a thousand [Gm] points of light or [Eb] shame.
Baby, [F] I don't [Bb] know.
