Hello, we're going to look at Simon de Garfunkel's Sound of Silence from the 60s.
It's a very nice tune and only four chords, so it's very much a beginner's song.
It helps if you can sing a little.
I'm assuming that you know the major chords, the main chords and minor chords,
but we'll go through the four [G] chords.
There's the A minor, [Am] [G] the G chord and [F]
the C [C] chord.
And that's it really.
Four verses, there's no chorus, just the four verses.
I'll try to sing the first [A] verse for you and you'll get an idea of the chord changes.
A gentle strumming pattern, [Am] nothing flashy.
Start off with A minor.
So, hello darkness [G] my old friend.
[Am] Because a vision softly came [C] in, it sees [F] where I [C] was coming.
And [F] a vision that was planted in [C] my brain.
[Am] [C]
[G] [Am]
And then straight into the second [E]
verse.
You can [A] finger pick it if you like to finger pick, [Am] but just a gentle strum for beginners.
And if you've got a half decent voice, you can get away with it.
[F#] Let's have a look again then at the first verse and you can see how easy it is.
Starting off with A minor, then [G] to G, to [Am] A minor.
So it's, hello darkness [G] my old friend G.
To talk with [Am] you again, A minor.
Because a vision [F] softly [C]
came in, it sees where I [F] [C]
[F] was coming.
And a vision that was planted in my [C] brain.
[Am] And straight into the second verse.
[C] [G]
[Am] So, A minor, G, A minor, [F]
[C] C, [F] F, [C] C, [F]
F, [C] C, [Am] A minor, [C]
[G] G,
[Am] and then you've got the strings.
