SONGWRITING - How To Write A Good Song! chords

Hey guys, I hope you're all good today
I wanted to make a video on a subject that I get asked about a lot and
Basically [F] a video that I feel like I would have watched when I was starting out and that would have probably helped me
So that is basically how do you actually write a song or more importantly?
How do you actually write a good song now?
Trust me?
There's a lot of trial and error [N] in this I'm obviously
Kind of partly professional at it, but I'm definitely not like a pro
I'm not like Elton John or Ed Sheeran, but I know a little bit about songwriting
I have studied it as well
So I basically thought I would share some of my [G] tips for you guys if you're starting out [F] or if you're interested in
Songwriting.
Okay, so number one
Ideally it is [Bb] good if you play an [C] instrument or you can sing to some degree now
[Fm] I know that's hard because obviously not everybody is capable [C] of those things or they feel that they're not
Trust me you are
Even if you don't play an [F] instrument if you can, you know
If you have a musical ear at least or you can you know, come up with melodies in your head
That [Bb] is the basis [N] of creating a song.
Obviously.
The melody is the main part
So what you want to do is work on a melody or a hook line [C] come up with something if you do play an instrument
Say it's on the guitar piano.
I know some drummers that do some writing as well
You just want to come up with like a hook line and a basis for the song because [G] you're creating the foundation
For the song first whenever I write I usually because I play guitar
I'll come up with some chords or I'll come up with maybe like an idea like a [Fm] finger picked
Kind of melody and that will usually form some kind [D] of basis or foundation for [Dbm] my song
So when [Fm] you have like a melody line or chords and you've sort of formed the basis for your song
You want to start thinking [D] about lyrics now lyrics are a really hard thing
If you have like a creative background or say that you're good at English
That usually does help obviously.
It's a creative outlet.
So you're putting out your [F] feelings
You're putting out ideas that you might have in your head.
So I do believe that anybody [C] can do it
What I would say is do a little bit of research [F] listen to your favorite artists [Fm] and songs and think about what they're about
You want [D] to come up with an idea?
Generally of where your song is going say you [F] want it to be like a love song or you want it to be a story
About your life all of this helps [Gm] just with the [F] lyric process
I would say so definitely do a little bit of research listen to your favorite songs [G] and
Think about how their lyrics are written and how their songs just flow
It's [C] the [F] feel of the song and obviously the lyrics as well that knit together to create that overall
Story.
Okay.
So if we've got both of those down the [G] next thing I would say that is very important is [C] a structure
Anybody can sort of just write and [Bb] you can write and it will just go on [F] and on
But if you've got no structure to your song, it's gonna be a pretty long [Dm] song
So we need to [Bbm] get some kind of structure down [D] here
So a typical song [C] will have a verse chorus verse [Dm] chorus
Then usually [B] like a bridge part or some songs say like a rock song [Dm] will have like a guitar
Solo, and then it will go back into like a last chorus
That's a very sort of you know
Basic [F] great structure for a song if you want to [D] go along with that kind of structure by all means that's perfect
You might want to [N] change that though, you know being a writer you can do whatever you want
I mean, it's a creative outlet.
So you might want to create like an instrumental song break down parts or solo parts
That's awesome.
But you definitely need a structure.
So I would take the time to sit down and
think about where the song is going and
How it's gonna you know have peaks and troughs and how it's gonna just tell your story
The last thing that I [D] think is really important within a song is dynamics
I took a lot of influence [N] from guitarists that finger pick a lot
There's also acoustic guitarists such as like Tommy Emanuel who does a lot of percussive things on his guitar
Which I think is really interesting
I just think it's really nice to have an element of real good dynamics in a song
So in some of my songs, for example
I have some finger pick parts and then I'll have like upbeat parts on the guitar
My [F] recent song that I put out clear is quite funky in the choruses, but then it goes quite [Dm] rocky
I just think to keep it interesting [C] in a song you'll notice this when you listen to other [D] songs
They have dynamics in the song.
So there's a lot of changes, you know
Don't be [C] afraid to think about different dynamics think about [N] different instruments in there as well
It all creates texture to a song and just makes it more interesting
Just more awesome for the listener.
Okay, so with all of this in place
I do feel like you could create an awesome song what I would just say and what I would suggest is just don't be afraid
Just go for it.
Don't get me wrong.
I have written [F] some crappy songs in my time
But I [Gm] feel like you've just got to be creative with it and you've just got to [F] enjoy it
You know, it all comes with experience [Cm] to be [Fm] honest
So don't be afraid to just go for it and just have fun with it
[F] Songwriting is a skill that you're literally always developing
Honestly, even the big songwriters will tell you that it takes a lot of time and they've probably written some rubbish songs in the past
[B] It is one of [Fm] those things just like any skill where you develop it and [Bb] you just [D] get better at it
So just [F] practice away keep doing it have fun with it.
And the main thing is don't put pressure on it
I feel like whenever you put pressure on it
It kind of stops that creative process and sometimes you just sort of right under pressure and it's not really the best thing
I'd love to hear your comments
If you have done [D] songwriting in the past or this is something that you're gonna take up
