I'm going to show you a few quick basic hand patterns that he's using for the main parts
of the song.
I'm not going to show you the whole song, I'm not going to show you all the fills and
transitions and improvisations, but I'll give you kind of the main bits and you can practice
those and build off them as you like.
Cool, so you probably know the intro.
I'll play it for you slowly in case you don't.
[A]
[C#m] [B]
[G#m]
[C#m] [A]
[C#m] [G#m]
[B]
[C#m]
[A]
[C#m]
[F#] [C#m]
So, I'm going to play it for you slowly in case you don't.
The next part starts on these two notes.
It's really the only time that he's playing the melody up here is in the beginning of the song.
[G#] But it sounds [C#m] like this.
[A]
[C#m] So I'll play that again real slow, if I can.
[A]
[C#m]
[A#] Okay, and the next part repeats.
Then he goes into what I'll call the [Gm] main chorus [C] or the main melody of the song.
So it's the same [A] kind of hand patterning, but it's starting [G#] here, he just shifts down [A] here.
[F#m]
[B]
[G#m]
[A]
[F#m]
[B]
[G#m]
[C#] Okay, [Gm] so you'll notice he's using kind of like a double
[C#] tap for [F#] what you would call
I guess the snare or the clink of the song.
[A]
[B]
[G#m]
[A]
[F#m] [B]
[G#m]
[N] The next part he goes into a groove on the ding.
So I'll show you the little walk down and kind of give you the main ideas of the ding.
If you watch Sam, he carries the whole percussive beat on his right hand.
I do it probably a little different than he does.
But yeah, anyway, the main ding groove kind of goes something [C#m] like this.
[B]
[A]
[D#] [C#m]
Okay, then he moves into the soft part of the song, which is really lovely sounding.
The foundation melody is here, [B] here, [C#m] and then here.
[A#] So the other hand just kind of walks around the pan and you can see it really slowly here.
[A] [F#m]
[A] [D#]
[C#]
[G] [C#m]
[F#m] [A] [D#]
[C#]
[B] [C#m]
He's taking in the main chorus of the song.
Then he goes into what I would like to call the bridge.
And it's another really lovely part, but he kind of shifts the melody around
to alternating sides [F#] of the pan here.
[C#m]
[A]
[C#m]
[A]
[C#m] That's [G] actually a nice way to move back into the ding part.
So yeah, those are the basic parts of the song, some kind of basic hand patterns that you can practice.
You can adjust if you want to play it more like Sam.
You can practice transitioning back and forth between the parts, rearranging them into different patterns.
Or you can even build off of it yourself and throw in some improv and put your own style on it.
Again, this is a C sharp aeolian, and it's the same panties playing in the Busters video.
