Robbie Robertson Found Peace with Fellow Band Member Levon Helm chords
Start Jamming...
[Bb] Robbie Robertson says he found some resolution with his old drummer bandmate
LeVon Helm near his end.
I'm [Gm] John Bowden from RockHistoryMusic.com. You don't have
to have a former bandmate to understand that sometimes you can't resolve things
with people.
Just think of one of your ex-lovers [Bb] for instance.
You can say
you're sorry, [Gm] you can reach out with an olive branch, but it doesn't mean they're
going to accept it or want anything to do with you.
As far as Robertson and Helm,
[Cm] near Helm's death, [Gm] Robertson said he came up to him and sat by his bed.
[Cm] CBS
Sunday Morning featured an interview with [Gm] Robertson while he was promoting
his new autobiography, Testimony.
[Cm] And interestingly, during the interview
[Gm] Robertson was having problems finding the chords or remembering the chords [Cm] to
one of their most [Gm] famous songs, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.
Robertson says,
yeah, I barely remember it.
I haven't played it since The Last Waltz.
The first run of
the band with all its original members ran from 1968 to 1977-78.
And splitting
up the band was tough on some of its members, especially Helm, who told CBS
Sunday Morning five years before his [Bb] death, that [Gm] don't make sense.
Have a big
going-out-of-business concert when talking about The Last Waltz.
He also
added that that swan song concert was Robertson's attempt to celebrate himself.
Back then, reporter Anthony Mason asked Helm if there would ever be any healing
[Eb] between them.
To which Helm answered, I doubt it.
Not as [Gm] long as he wants to
claim everything the band ever made.
Fast forward to [Cm] today, [Gm] Mason looks at
Robertson and says, did you guys ever mend fences?
Robertson says, as much as I
love him and admired his extraordinary musical talent, I could not do that
bitterness anymore.
But when they called me and said, he's in the hospital and
he's dying, [Bb] I sat with him and held his hand.
I sat there and thought of a lot of
[Gm] beautiful things that we had been through together.
And I was happy for
that moment to kind of wash away any [Bb] dark clouds.
[Gm]
[Bb] [Gm] [Bb] In 1994, The Three once again
appeared on stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the band was inducted.
Helm did not attend.
The drummer was still [Gm] at odds with Robertson for years
over accusations of stolen songwriting credits.
Levon Helm died of cancer on April 19, 2012.
He was 71.
[Bb] At 55, Rick Danko passed
of heart failure in his sleep [Gm] on December 10, 1999.
Richard Manuel
committed suicide after performing with the band March 4, [Eb] 1986.
He was 42.
[Gm] As of
this taping, Garth Hudson is 79, Robbie [Eb] Robertson is 73.
