On behalf of my family, Richard's family, and I know Rick's family, from Richard's spirit, with all my heart, I thank you.
[Bm] [A]
This will be short and sweet.
I'd like to thank Phil Murphy and Alex Clark and Earl Ray, Nilly
Mulligan, Clifford Von Custer, Thomas [Bb] Chatto, Glenn Bricklin, Derek Knight, Johnny Downs, Tony
Caminiti, Eddie Bell, Ron Fleming, Bob Comber, Serge Danilov, Jack Wingate, Paul Hutchins, Paul
London, Bob Riley, Jerry Risser, Armon Beladian, Carmen [Gb] Allgrove, Joe Allgrove, Barbara Simpson,
Gordon Field, Clayt Hiley, Mike Timms, Ronnie Hawkins, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Wild Bill
Davis, Thumbs Carlisle, Joelle Sonnier, Clifford Scott, I was talking to Marty Greb who is a triple
threat instrumentalist and an excellent songwriter.
[G] Our last album, [Ab] I asked him, who's your favorite
tenor player?
You know, in this era they call now, I think the collectors have named it jump blues.
[G] Some collector told me it was urban small horn band jump blues.
But that's the stuff I heard
Alan Freed play from Cleveland Akron before he went to New York and I picked up on all the tenor
players that I could hear [Gb] and there's one that I want to mention tonight, Clifford Scott, and you've
all heard him play.
Most of his work was done with the Bill Doggett quartet, Shape Shepard, Bill
Doggett, the great guitar player Billy Butler, and Clifford.
And you've all heard Honky Tonk.
[Ab] I'd
like to thank his sister [F] [Bb] Marcy Jones for [Gb] keeping me in touch with Clifford.
He's no longer with us,
he's a true hero.
To complete the list and bring everything up to date, Terry Baker, thank you.
Steve Martin, thanks to Dave Fishoff, Marcia Mason, Bruce Garfield, Stephen Rothenberg, Hal
Wilner, Stephen Semenowicz, Marianne Faithful, Ed Kasher, Ninad Bach, Sally Grossman, thank you
Sally.
[Eb]
Ian Kimmett, Aaron Hurwitz, Anthony Aquilado, David A.
Bell, you all know David.
[Gm] Special
thanks to Elizabeth Danko, Dominique Robertson, Sandra [B]
Helm, and Richard's beautiful daughter Paula,
who's here tonight.
And thank you to my wife Maude, [N] she couldn't make it.
And most of all,
special thanks to Joe Forno, who also has carried us through a very difficult period, and now we're
on the verge of something big.
Give us another year.
Well, first of all, I'd like to thank Garth
Hudson, of course all the people who voted for us, and my favorite spokesman for the band,
Eric Clapton.
And thanks to Rock and Roll, and thank you.
First, I would like to say how grateful
I am for the opportunity to make music and records with Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Levon
Helm, and Richard Manuel.
I'm convinced now, as I was then, that nobody in the world could sing
and play the songs that I wrote with as much believability and soulfulness as they have.
It's
an honor to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, just to be mentioned alongside the
recording artists who have been such a tremendous influence on us, Muddy and Elvis and Chuck and
Buddy and Ray and Mahalia Jackson, whom I hope will be acknowledged next year.
We should thank
Ronnie Hawkins for being so instrumental in us coming together [Ab] and for teaching us [Gb] the code of
the road, so to speak.
Bob Dylan for not caving in when we were being booed everywhere we played,
and when just about everybody was saying, get rid of these guys.
He didn't budge.
I'd like to thank
Capitol Records for gambling on a band with no name, Mo Austin for supporting The Last Waltz,
David Geffen for helping reunite Bob and the band, and Elbert Grossman for his kitchen and his
guidance and for actually starting the whole Woodstock thing.
[D] If it wasn't for Elbert,
the festival might have been called Poughkeepsie.
The Poughkeepsie generation, [Abm] it just doesn't
quite have the same ring to it.
[B]
[N]
I'd like to thank my friend Martin Scorsese for lending his
filmmaking genius to The Last Waltz, and of course all the great artists who performed in the film,
and Eric Clapton for being so gracious to induct us this evening.
Most of all, I'd like to thank my
wife Dominique, who's been patiently putting up with me for 27 years, and our three children,
Alexandra, Delphine, and Sebastian, for being the truest inspiration in my life.
Thank you.
