[Dm]
[Gm]
Here's an old [C] Stanley Brothers song, and I want to do it for you tonight.
[F]
I don't blame you [Bb] for I know you [F] want him
That [C] your love for me was never [F] real
I could hold [Bb] you but you'd be [F] unhappy
But it's [C]
alright if that's the way you [F] be
I know that [Bb]
we'll always [C] go on [F]
caring
And my [C] feelings now I must [F] concede
I [Bb] [C] still [F]
need [Bb] you and I want [F] you in me
But it's [C] alright if that's the way [F] you be
Twin Fiddles, boys!

[G] believe them
But it's [D] alright if that's the way you [G] be

[F] Ralph, tell me a little bit about your upbringing.
[B] I know you were born over in [Dm] Dickinson County, [Bb] Virginia.
[A] And what was [Ab] Dickinson County, [B] Virginia like
[Bb] when you were [D] five or six years old?
Was you [Db] listening to the [Dm] radio?
Did your [G] mom and dad have a radio at that time?
[A] Well, yeah, we had an old battery radio.
[Eb] I mean, we got our first [Db] battery radio about [Bb]
1936, I believe.
And we could get the grand old op-ed.
[Dm] And there was some early morning shows on from here and there.
[Bb] We used to hear a lot of people like [Db] Maynard Mountaineer, Monroe Brothers, Carter [D] Family.
People [G] like that.
Oh, boy.
[Db] Well, that's a great way to grow up, listen to that kind of music.
I think so.
How did the Clinch Mountain Boys get its name?
Say, I know the answer [Bb] to all these questions because I've studied you for so long,
but there's a lot of folks out there that might not [D] know.
How did the Clinch Mountain [Bm] Boys get the name?
Well, we live right in the southwestern part of Virginia.
And [Dbm] that's in the corner of Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
And the [B] Clinch Mountains [D] run from North Carolina up through Virginia and Tennessee.
[A] So [C] we live real [Db] close to the Clinch [Bb] Mountains, and we decided we'd name it that.
[Db] Makes sense to me.

Tell me, [D] I know Carter played [Db] the guitar, and Carter passed away.
A lot of folks may not know.
Carter passed away in 1966.
[Ab] But back when y'all were growing up, I know Carter got a guitar.
He ordered one from the mail, is [F] that right?
And the postman brought it or something like that?
That's right, [Dm] yeah.
There was a mail carrier [Gb] brought the mail through by [D] our house on a horse.

That bridle rein would be on the horse's neck [Db] and him playing that [E] harmonica.
The horse was getting rhythm.
[D] That's right.
And we'd sit down at the mailbox just to [Gm] get to talk to him.
Oh, that's [C] great.
Wait on him.
[D] I [Bbm] know one time [Gm] you and Carter entered the same [Bb] talent contest,
[B] not as the Stanley Brothers, but [A] as y'all were [Db] trying to compete against each other.
Is that right?
You gonna make me tell [D] that?
Yeah, well.
[Db]
Well, we used to have [D] a jamboree in Grundy, Virginia,
Morgan Theater [Ab] over there, every Friday night.
[C] And we would try to think of something each week, you [D] know,
to help draw a crowd, something special.
So I played the banjo.

And, you know, he just got up and a little better showmanship.
[G] Well, he was a great one, I'll tell [D] you that.
We'll be back, and I promise.
