Thanks to this wonderful person here, my brother, Vince Gill.
He got me here.
[Bb] I didn't think I was going to be able to be here today.
And my husband, Henry Gordy Jr.,
who just dearly loves Ralph's family, always did.
We both were raised on the Stanley brothers.
[Am] And [Gb] Henry had taken ill back in April, and he's been battling an infection for the past ten weeks.
[Bb] But he is back on his feet and doing well.
[N] But he says, Honey, you've got to leave me.
Yes.
And you've got to leave and you've got to go on with Vince and be there for Ralph and Jimmy and Ralph's family.
And I'm so blessed to [C] be here today.
Thank you, Vince.
[Bb]
Ralph, I have to [C] tell you that doing Pretty Polly [Bb] with him [N] means so much to me, and it did so much.
I mean, I had a career, but it just raised it even further doing it with Ralph Stanley.
And to sing with him on stage, because he was the one that taught me how to sing.
[Bb] When I was a little girl, I didn't know it.
But when I would listen, when Daddy would listen and Mom would [E] listen to the music, [Bbm]
that it totally [N] became inside me, that it reached inside my heart.
And I continue to try my best to touch people's lives as Ralph did with his [Bb] voice.
His voice was his [A] instrument and how beautiful [C] it was.
[Bb] And he reached so many all over this world, [N] all over this world.
And I'm, again, so blessed to be here.
Thank you.
Just [Gm] like to echo that [N] same sentiment, just grateful for the invitation by the family, Nathan, Ralph, and [Bb] everybody.
And this means the world to me that in some small way, I'm added to Ralph.
[N] And I remember as a 16-year-old boy, I was really taken with bluegrass.
And the first festival I ever got to hear Ralph's voice in person was life-changing.
And that was the voice of all the voices I ever heard in bluegrass music that was the most mournful, the most soulful.
And it reached deep inside of me more than any other voice I'd ever heard in bluegrass.
[Bb] And I was honored to write this song and sing it today for this family and help them heal and help them feel better about the struggle they're going through.
And what's beautiful about this song is I wrote this song to honor my brother.
My brother passed away some 23 years ago.
And what is beautiful to me is to be at this home place where the truth is this song, if it had not been for the music of the Stanley Brothers, especially Ralph's voice, I wouldn't have known how to write this song.
And I wouldn't have known how to sing this song if it had not been for Ralph Stanley.
And when I recorded it, I wanted it [Am] to be as pure as I could [E] get it.
[Bb]
And I [N] invited two people that are the children of that music in Patti Loveless and Ricky Skagg.
