This is a guitar lesson for Ricky Nelson's waiting in school, particularly from the Pulp
Fiction scene when they're walking [G] into [Ab] Jack Rabbit Slims, all from [G] GuitarMadeEasy.com.
Try saying that 10 times fast.
[E] So make sure your guitar is in standard E tuning.
[Ab] Take your capo, put it on the first fret like so, [N]
and this is kind of a 50s strumming pattern
right here, okay?
So what we're doing is we're holding a chord and then we're muting that chord by taking
the tension off the strings.
So if I play [F] through an E,
[Bb] hear that right there?
I take the tension off the strings now and that's what my E is going to sound [Fm] like.
I'm not playing this D and this E string [F] and I'm not playing this low [N] E.
I'm just focusing
[Fm] on the A, the D, and the G string, okay?
So it should go
[G] See the difference?
All right, now here's [D] when I [Ab] incorporate my right hand in the strumming pattern, okay?
[Fm] So it goes
This
[F]
is [Fm]
the verse.
[F] The majority of the song actually is just on this keyboard, okay?
[Bb] [C]
[F] All right, so [Ab] what I was doing there the whole time I was on E, okay?
[Eb] And then [F] it goes
So [C] [F] [Bb] it goes to A and [C] then to B.
[D] And then I [Eb] go back into the E, A, B thing again.
This [F] time I strum all the way through it.
So I go
And then the word goes
[Ab] And [Bb] then it goes to [C] A, [Fm] to B.
And then [N] that's
This part right here is where I strum all the way [F] through it.
So I [Bb] [C] go
And
[Gm] then I go into the [D] [B] little
[Ab] It's almost like an interlude.
And [A] it's [E] basically Ricky Nelson is just jamming [F] on this E chord.
And he's taking his pinky [Abm] and putting it on the third [Fm] fret E string and [F] then taking it
off and then putting it on the [G] second string, or I'm sorry, second fret.
[Ab] This is the E string on the third [F] fret.
Takes it off, plays [G] it open.
Second fret [Fm] E string.
Takes it off, plays it open.
So when you strum [Bb] along with the entire chord and do that at the same time, [F] this is what
it sounds like.
A third time in there what I did was this.
I went
All right, [Fm] so third fret E string, open E string.
[G] Second fret E [F] string, open E string.
And then I go down to this [Dm] B string on the second fret.
And then I do the [Fm] open E string.
And I do that again.
[N] But the whole time I'm not plucking individual strings.
I'm strumming all the way through the chord.
[F] So I'm going
Not bad, okay?
[Fm]
So that's the entire [Bb] chord progression for the song, okay?
It just basically stays on E and then at various points it goes to A and then [C] to C.
I'm sorry, not C, B.
[Bb] So A, [C] [Fm] B.
[Bb] [C]
[F] [Bb] [C]
[A] Okay?
And then [Dm] one more thing I want to show you is the little ouch of the song.
At the very end it [C] [Fm] [F] goes
[C] [F] And that's in Pulp [N] Fiction.
That's how he ends the song.
So all I'm doing [C] there is right after that B, I go third fret [D] A string, fourth fret A
[E] string, and then first fret D [F] string.
And then I end on the E note [Db] on the [Ab] [Gm] second fret D [F] string, okay?
And then I strum through E.
And that's [Cm] it, okay?
So really not bad.
Just remember, get the rhythm down, get the strumming [Bb] pattern down, watch that part of
the video a couple times, [Fm] and then all it is is your E, [Bb] your A, [C] and your B chord.
Not bad.
Great scene [N] from a movie.
That's one of my favorite scenes from any of those movies.
