[G] Hey guys, it's [B] Daryl here.
Welcome back to the channel.
[G] For this week's video we are
going to be [Am] comparing a nylon [G] string vs a steel string acoustic guitar.
[Em] Now if you're
looking to purchase your first [B] guitar, or [Em] perhaps you've been playing electric guitar
for [D] 3 or 4 [C] years and you want [D] something different, [G] or you're a parent or grandparent looking
to [B] buy a guitar for your kids, [Em] you've come to the right place.
So what [C] we're going to
do is just take a [G] brief walkthrough of the instruments to talk about the [B] differences
and how they feel to play, and [Em] then we're going to do some playing examples.
[C]
[G] [B] One of
the [Em] biggest differences between these guitars [Bm] is the string spacing, or the nut [C] width.
On
[G] classical instruments you have a wide spacing, so as [B] a new player it's actually really great
[E] because as you play either [C] single notes [G] or chords you just have a little bit more room
for your right hand and for your left hand to make your chord shapes or your notes without
accidentally hitting other strings.
So if you're learning a D [B] chord, [Bm] often [G] times new
players [E] have a hard time getting [Em] that first string to ring because your fingers are [D] touching
it, or if you're playing a [G] C, getting the third string to ring through all your fingers
is [E] very difficult.
[Em] And on a classical instrument, because you have more [C] spacing and more room,
it [G] becomes easier for the new player.
So [B] that's one of the big advantages.
[Em] I guess one of
the downsides to the spacing is when you're making 3 [G] fret chords, like a D minor, [B] an F,
or that C, [Em] it's a little trickier because you have to reach [Am] out plus you have to reach
a little higher.
So [G] it's kind of got its [B] advantages and disadvantages, but generally
I think for the new [Em] player the width is an advantage [G] overall.
Another advantage to this
[B] design is the nylon [G] strings are under [Em] less tension than a steel string guitar, so the
notes are easier to press down, and that goes for [G] bar chords especially.
They can be quite
tricky and require a lot of pressure on a steel string.
On a classical instrument they're
quite a bit easier to play.
And the diameter [A] of the strings [B] themselves, they don't kind
of cut into your [E] fingertips the same way as [C] a really thin, light steel string does.
[G] You'll still have to build up calluses [B] obviously, [G] but because the surface area is a little bit
greater on the [C] nylon string and the tension is a little [G] less, it's a little bit easier
to play [Bm] at first.
Alright, so let's take a listen to [Em] these guitars.
What we're going
to do is play them back to back in [G] three different genres so you guys can really get a feel of
the [B] tonal differences between these two instruments.
[E] And then we're going to play them [Em] in a mix,
so I'm just going to do a little bit of soloing.
Alright, enjoy!
