NOFX's Fat Mike Plays His Favorite Bass Riffs chords
Start Jamming...
[Eb] Hi, this is Fat Mike [B] from NoFX and you're watching Loudwire.
[E] [Eb] [B]
[Db] I suppose the first riff that I heard that [E] maybe you want to be a good bass player
[A] is Steve Soto's riff in The Adolescents.
It goes like this.
[D] [A]
[Bm] [A]
[E] The first [F] riff I ever learned was either the second song on Bad Religion's first [A] album which goes
like this.
[C] Or [G] [Db]
[C] [G] [A]
it could have been Paranoid by the Dickies, not Black Swan.
[G]
[A]
[G] [C] [N]
I taught myself to play the bass so I kind of struggled with just playing the bass correctly.
And I used to hit really hard because I thought you, you know, to play bass you had to hit hard
because it looks like bass players do that.
And then I switched to a thin pick, a .60
Jim Dunlop.
Which are usually grey.
But at NAMM, or NAMM, the music convention, I met Jim Dunlop and I said,
dude your .60
picks are the best.
Could you make me one with my name on it?
Because, you know,
they press [E] people's names.
[B]
A nylon one, you can't silkscreen these.
He [G] goes, well no, we never do
that.
We've had the same molds since the 60s.
I said, that's cool, but can you make me one?
And he was drunk on [Eb] tequila so I got my own Jim Dunlop.
[Bb] The [N]
band that was most influential to me was RKL, Rich Kids and LSD.
And I couldn't figure
out any of their songs.
But Bomber, the original, the first guy who wrote the cool bass lines,
he showed me something.
It's Blocked Out, called [D] Blocked Out.
[C]
[D] [G] [F] [D] [C]
[Abm] Here's one more by RKL, which is just a weird riff.
It's called Hangover.
[Gb] [A] [B] [A]
[B] [A] [B]
Weird riff, but RKL wrote killer riffs.
Other bands that influenced me,
I won't display this, [Ab] but
[D]
[E]
[D] I [E] can't say what the first riff is that I wrote for NoFX.
I write all the songs.
But
I think my first really cool bass riff was for The Death of John Smith.
[D] [G] [A]
My [G] [Am] [D]
[A] [G] favorite NoFX bass riffs, I think I can do three.
I think I invented this style of bass riff.
I do it in two songs, The Decline and The Idiots Are Taken Over.
It's a weird circular pattern.
It's a triplet.
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
Suits and Ladders.
This is a cool riff.
[Ebm] Hard to [E] play.
[D]
[C] [N]
And there's one in Decline.
It's funny, I can't play it on stage.
I don't play it.
[Gb] I have to hold the bass up here.
I can't [G] reach it.
Here's how it goes.
[Bm] [A]
[D] [E] [D] It goes like this.
[A] [G] [Bm] [A]
[D] The song goes like this, usually.
[A] [G] [E]
I [D]
kind of got it.
One more try.
It goes like this.
[A] [G] [E]
[D] [A] [G] [E]
[D] [E] Oh,
[Eb] did I get it?
[Abm] My favorite bass riff off our new album, titled Single Album,
is from a song called Doors and Fours.
It's not hard to play.
It's just kind of,
I like it because, [E]
[B] [E]
[B] [E]
[B] [E]
[G] [Gb] [N]
in closing, I think the most important thing about playing bass is
playing with a thin pick and playing lightly.
Because [G] our job [E] as bass players is to just [Gbm] have
a nice round tone [E] so that vocals and guitars sound.
We make other people sound better.
So don't.
[F] Should be [A] all, you know.
I'm playing fast, but I play very softly.
[F]
[A]
[F]
Play [B] softly, carry a thin pick.
[A] Like in Kids to the K-Hole, which is really cool.
It goes.
[B] [A]
[G] [Gb] [A]
[C]
[Bb] [A] [C]
[E] [Ebm]
